European Championships - The Final

The European Championships came to an end last night amid scenes of joyful celebrations and heart-breaking tears. There were even some tears long before the match itself had ended because of injury. I cover all the action in this final post in my blog series on the European Championships.

The Match – Review

Portugal vs France

The final kicked-off with France the favourites to win another major tournament on their home soil. Portugal started better though, keeping the ball away from the French midfielders and putting them on the back foot. Slowly but surely, France started to take control after the 15 minute mark. Soon after, a genuine challenge from Dmitri Payet caught Ronaldo on the knee causing his leg to turn 90 degrees. His reaction was immediate, one of resignation. Although the physios patched him up and allowed him to come back on, he didn’t last very long after. The Portuguese captain left the pitch on a stretcher, in tears because of not being able to play any further part in the game. This seemed to take the sting out of France’s as well, with both teams surely thinking about the injury to Ronaldo. The first half was devoid of further clear-cut chances. Portugal were assured on the ball and didn’t let the hosts take control.

The second half continued in much the same vein. France had the better of the possession but they couldn’t break down the resolute Portuguese defense. A surprising substitution saw Payet replaced by Coman early in the second half. Deschamps was looking to introduce pace to get behind the Portugal defense. Moussa Sissoko was having a good game for the hosts. With less than 20 minutes to go Antoine Griezmann glanced a free header over the bar from less than 6 yards. Considering the goal-scoring form he was in, this was a sitter. Lloris had to make his first saves in the 80^th minute, a double effort, to first keep out a Nani cross-shot which was dipping under the bar and then to catch an acrobatic Quaresma overhead kick. These were the best chances Portugal created all match. The match had reached injury time and it was looking like another long night was on the cards. Gignac almost changed the script. He sent Pepe the wrong way with a sweet turn before scruffing his shot past Rui Patricio. Unluckily for him and the hosts, the ball came back out of the inside of the post and was cleared to safety. That was the last chance of regulation time and France were ruing the missed opportunities.

Portugal took control in extra time, feeding off the tiring French outfield players. Raphael Guerrero hit the post from a well disguised free-kick. Towards the end of the first half of extra time, Eder headed the ball into the ground, only to see it being blocked on the line by Lloris. France were living dangerously.

In the 109^th minute, Eder picked up the ball after a pass from the left wing. He held off two defenders with his strength before launching a hard, low drive on target. Lloris could not get across. Portugal were ahead and it was perhaps the unlikeliest of goal-scorers who’d given them the lead. Cristiano Ronaldo, back on the bench after preliminary treatment, was in tears following the goal. France pushed after the goal, but tired bodies and minds meant they weren’t effective going forward. Pepe was immense all game and he kept out the French a couple of times in the dying minutes. The referee, Mark Clattenburg, blew the final whistle crowning Portugal as the new European Champions. Portugal had scratched and clawed their way to the title, playing a tactical game perfectly suited to their strengths while keeping their weaknesses at bay. Coach Santos had got his tactics spot on and was able to get the best out of his squad.

My Prediction: Portugal 1-2 France

European Championships - The Final Preview

Here we are, after a month of football, on the cusp of the decider. The European Championships draw to a close later tonight in Paris. The finalists have been decided after two competitive semi-final matches. The hosts France take on Portugal in the final.

Before I preview the teams and the final, I’d like to re-live some of the best moments from the knockout stage of the competition. Concluding this, my preview and my prediction (without bias), will be presented.

Memorable Moments

Xherdan Shaqiri scores the Goal of the Tournament

Xherdan Shaqiri scored with an outrageous overhead kick from the edge of the penalty box against Poland. Too bad his team went out in the penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regular time and after extra time.

France have a New Darling

Antoine Griezmann scored two goals in quick succession to overcome the resilient Irish, after the latter had gone ahead early in the game.

'Hazard'ous Warning to Rivals

Eden Hazard was back to his majestic best after a below par showing in the Group Stage. His performance helped Belgium hammer Hungary 4-0 in their second round match.

Conte is the Best Tactician

In what felt like deja vu of their game against Belgium in the group stage, Italy, powered by Conte's brilliant tactics, outsmarted Spain to progress to the Quarter Final.

The Vikings sink the Queen's Fleet

This image of Iceland's post-match celebration after defeating England is the most iconic of the entire tournament. Their win against the fancied English is the biggest shock of the tournament.

Portugal keep Scraping Through

Another round, another draw in regulation time, but Portugal once again found a way past their opponents. Poland were the unfortunate team this time as they fell short in the penalty shootout.

Belgium are Cryuff-ed

Wales came from behind to beat Belgium in one the most accomplished attacking displays of the tournament. This turn from Hal Robson-Kanu, for Wales's second goal of the game, was the outstanding highlight in a match which showed that Wales belong at this level.

Buffon in Tears after Germany Break Jinx

One of the saddest moments of the Championships came with  the tearful exit of Gianluigi Buffon after Germany finally defeated Italy in a major tournament via the penalty shootout.

France put on a Classy Display to Oust Iceland

The much maligned Olivier Giroud put in a Man of the Match performance in France's peerless display against Iceland. Their opponents did themselves no harm with their second half effort, despite already being down by four goals in the first half. Iceland would leave the tournament with their heads held high.

Ronaldo powers Portugal past Wales

A goal (from the header in picture above) and an assist from their captain Cristiano Ronaldo helped Portugal reach the Final of the Euros following their first win in regulation time in the tournament.

The Little Prince stops the Juggernaut

The picture above perfectly portrays the varying moods of the opponents in the second semi-final. Germany, despite overwhelming France with possession, failed to take advantage. France took their chances, capitalising on uncharacteristic German defensive lapses for both goals. Antoine Griezmann scored both goals and had etched himself into Euro and French folklore.

Match Preview - The Final

The Teams

France

Buoyed by the home support and their win against the World Champions, France will be the favourites going into this game. They have always performed brilliantly in their home tournaments, having won both Euro '84 and the World Cup '98 on home soil. They've had the best attacking force among all teams in the tournament in Griezmann, Payet and Giroud. Add to that the midfield prowess of Pogba and Matuidi and the defensive stability of Koscielny and Sagna, and it's no wonder they've come this far.

Portugal

Some are saying that Portuguese have been very lucky to have come this far. They only qualified for the knockout rounds because of the newly implemented third place rule. They have not been the best going forward, as is evident from their lack of goals, barring the Hungary and Wales games. Yet, despite all of that, credit must be given where it's due. They've held their nerve on more than one occasion. They don't have the best team, but teamwork has got them this far, Cristiano Ronaldo has stepped up to be counted when it has mattered most. Nani has provided able support, while Raphael Guerrero has been impressive in the wings. Youngster Renato Sanches has been a revelation and is sure to start the final. However, the pressure will once again be on their talisman to come up with the goods on this grandest of occasions.

The Match

France are favourites going into this game. They'll be looking to attack Portugal from the start and try to force mistakes. There is little chance of a repeat of their counter-attacking tactic from the game against Germany. Portugal on the other hand, would be looking to do exactly what France did against Germany. They do lack firepower going forward compared to the hosts, and they'd have to compensate it with smart football. Coach Santos has his task cut out in foiling the French attackers. Having said that, Portugal have done an excellent job so far in keeping their opponent's best players quiet all through the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo would have to lead from the front if his country is to get past the French. Will France win on home soil once again, or will Portugal pull another one out of the bag and lift the trophy for the first time? 

All the facts point to France as the favourites. However, given how the tournament has gone for Portugal, it is a very tough call. I'd still go for a narrow French victory here. If Portugal do open the scoring, they'd probably hang on for the win.

My Prediction: Portugal 1-2 France

European Championships - Semi-Final Review

Two potentially intriguing fixtures were played out in the semi-finals of the European Championships. The hosts were still in the fray as newcomers Wales were looking to continue their dream run. World Champions Germany, ever-present at this stage of any major tournament, were still on course for the double. Portugal, amazingly, without a win in regulation time, were looking at upsetting the form books and getting their hands on their first major international trophy.

Match Reviews

Portugal vs Wales

Portugal have been the major beneficiaries of the introduction of the third place rule in this edition of the Euros. Wales were looking to repeat their excellent showing against Belgium, for a place in the final. The first half was a drab affair with neither team able to mount a serious offensive. The absence of Ramsey was glaringly evident when it came to Wales’s attacking intent. Portugal were playing like they have for most of the tournament. With neither keeper troubled, the half faded into half-time and both managers had a job on their hands lifting the morale and the game of their respective wards.

The second half started with a bang! Ronaldo rose like a basketball player going for the slam-dunk to meet a corner and power his header past the helpless Hennessey. The Welsh defender was dwarfed by Ronaldo’s eight and a half foot leap. 3 minutes later, Portugal were further ahead. Ronaldo found Nani with an assist, who made no mistake in scoring past the troubled Hennessey. Wales were dumbstruck by the Portuguese double blow. From here on in, it was a question of whether the depleted Welsh attack could somehow drag themselves back into the game. They tries, like they’ve done all tournament, but Bale was mostly isolated in attack, and the Portuguese defense were able to keep danger at bay. Portugal did launch counter-attacks on a few occasions, but they were more the kind to ball the ball away from their own half. Wales fell short in this match. They’d had a brilliant campaign and could leave with their pride enhanced. This was Portugal’s first win in regulation time in the tournament and it was taking them to the final!

My Prediction: Portugal 1-3 Wales

Final Score: Portugal 2-0 Wales

Germany vs France

It was World Champions versus Hosts in the second semi-final. France got off to a better start with Griezmann shooting on goal within the first few minutes. His effort lacked the power to beat Neuer. Germany started taking control, soon dominating midfield. Toni Kroos was putting in a much improved performance. For a spell of 10-15 minutes in the middle of the first half, France were unable to get the ball out of their own half! The Germans were unable to take advantage of the possession though as the absence of a regular center-forward was evident. They were loath to put in crosses preferring instead to play the ball in through the middle. France were able to keep such attacks out. A good French chance which fell to Giroud was stopped by a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Howedes. Right at the end of the half, another German defensive lapse reared its head. Patrice Evra headed a cross towards goal only for Schweinsteiger, the player marking him to handle inside the box. The referee took his time before awarding a penalty, which was the right decision. The German captain had jumped with his hands up, similar if not as comical as Boateng’s flapping lead against Italy. Antoine Griezmann stepped up to take the penalty. Neuer went the wrong way and France were ahead right at the stroke of half-time. All of Germany’s possession had come to nothing.

The second half started with France on the offensive, but without any result. Germany once again took control as the half wore on, but they were even less effective. Their manager Loew made a couple of substitutions in the hope of livening things up. However, immediately following a French substitution, a defensive one at that, France were gifted a chance. Germany gave away the ball in their own penalty box to Pogba. He easily got past Kimmich and crossed into a dangerous position. Neuer came to collect, but could only weakly parry it to Griezmann. The French forward toe-poked the ball through Neuer’s legs and into the goal. France were two goals up, a most unlikely lead considering how the game had gone. Germany went on the offensive, all guns blazing. However, similar output and outlet problems plagued them. Julian Draxler hit the post with 5 minutes remaining. Another German effort was acrobatically saved by Lloris soon after. France had a couple of chances to extend their lead, but they never materialized. The final whistle saw France into the final of yet another home tournament. They were one step closer towards emulating their triumph at home in 1984. Antonie Griezmann had just become the darling of the entire nation.

My Prediction: Germany 2-1 France

Final Score: Germany 0-2 France

The finalists are set in this edition of the European Championships. The hosts and former champions France will play 2004 runners-up Portugal in Paris on 10^th July. The hosts go in as favourites. However, given the resolve Portugal have shown in staying in the competition, this will be no cakewalk. I’ll be back with the preview of the final as well as some bonus material in tomorrow’s post. European Championships - Semi Final Preview

It's down to just four teams now.

Portugal haven't won in regulation time throughout the tournament, but hey haven't been beaten yet either. Pepe's injury is a worry for them, barring which coach Santos should have the full squad to select from.
Wales are missing two key men in the form of Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies, with the loss of Ramsey a big blow for their attacking style of play. It would be up to their talisman Bale to fill the hole left by Ramsey.
Germany overcame a dogged Italy, albeit via a comical penalty shootout. Like Wales, they too have key men missing. Khedira, Gomez and Hummels are out for this game with Schweinsteiger a doubt. The first two players will most likely not play any further part in the tournament.
France have the momentum on their side after a 5-2 drubbing of Iceland. They'd be looking to shore up their defense, after conceding two goals in the second half in the last game.

Match Previews

Portugal vs Wales

Traditionally both these teams like to play open attacking football. Portugal haven't been at their best in this tournament. Their over-reliance on star man Ronaldo has been apparent. The rest of the team have not showed up in regulation time to take up any of the burden. Renato Sanches was a bright spark in their last outing, grabbing the equalizer after Poland had gone ahead. That performance will go some way in justifying Bayern Munich's huge valuation of him. Portugal will be hoping more players can take up the initiative in this crunch game. 

Wales produced perhaps the performance of the tournament to come from behind and win against Belgium. They showed team-work, character and determination to chew away at Belgium's advantage and then land the killer blow late on. The country is still rejoicing in Hal Robson-Kanu's superb goal, an almost once-in-a-lifetime moment. Ramsey's loss though will be a big gap to fill.

Overall, I can see this game playing out in one of two ways. Either Wales blitz Portugal early, and hold on in the second half, in which case Wales will win. Or else, Portugal will hold firm for the 90 minutes, and force the match beyond, again! This would hand Portugal the advantage. I'm going to go with Wales again, as I've done all tournament. I think they will out-manoeuvre Portugal, who just haven't got going yet, despite coming this far.

My Prediction: Portugal 1-3 Wales

Germany vs France

France are on a high after their first half demolition of Iceland. They'll further be looking to take advantage of injuries and suspensions that the Germans are facing. In Antoine Griezmann, Dmitri Payet and Olivier Giroud, France have the best attack of all teams in these championships. All three are in contention for the Golden Boot come next Sunday.

The Germans on the other hand, would be hoping that the team changes they'll be forced to make won't have too much of an impact on their style of play. Losing key members of their team just at the wrong moment would mean others would have to step up their game. Toni Kroos had a poor game against Italy and his role would be very crucial towards Germany maintaining control of the midfield. Their glaring lack of center forwards will be exposed once again with Gomez, the only recognised forward, out of the tournament now with injury. This could mean a return for Mario Gotze, although his confidence wouldn't be sky-high at the moment. Germany would be looking at players like Ozil, Kroos and Draxler to provide them the attacking impetus they'd require against the hosts.

This will be a hard-fought, end-to-end encounter. At least, I hope so. Neither team is one to sit back and play defensive. France have the edge right now, in terms of personnel availability and momentum. But never count the Germans out in a big tournament. It is for this reason that I'm going for a narrow German win, despite the odds in the second semi-final. Let's hope we get a cracking game to watch.

My Prediction: Germany 2-1 France

The semi-final of the Euros promises two lively games. If the number of goals scored in the Quarter Finals are anything to by, then these matches should be quite enjoyable. I'll be back in a couple days with the reviews of both game. Till then, enjoy football...

European Championships - Quarter Final - Part 3

The weekend provided gripping drama and ruthless domination. Germany vs Italy was touted as the match of the fixture of the tournament so far, and although it wasn’t a goal-fest, it did provide a nail-biting finish. The hosts France were expected to get the better of surprise package Iceland, but after the minnows’ performance against England, it was hard to count them out completely.

Match Reviews

Germany vs Italy

Germany started the game better, putting pressure on Italy with fluent attacks. They did not allow Italy to settle down in the first half. Joachim Loew had gone with a five man defense to mirror the Italians and it seemed to be working perfectly. Sami Khedira was injured early on, which saw Schweinsteiger coming on in his place. We learnt later that Khedira will probably not play any further part in the tournament. The change in personnel did not affect the Germans who continued their assault on the Italian final third. They were loathe put in crosses though and Toni Kroos was having an awful game. The German midfielder, ususally the key cog in their machine was misplacing passes and delivering poor set pieces. The first half remained goalless, as Italy failed to produce any chances of note, hardly getting into the German penalty box.

Germany played in the same vein for much of the second half. After the hour mark, Mario Gomez was on the ball in the left flank. He slipped a pass through two Italian defenders to find the run of Hector. The defender’s cross took a deflection before falling kindly for Ozil. Ozil’s darting run into the box was rewarded with a first goal of the tournament. Chiellini’s best efforts did not allow him to get a touch on the ball. A few minutes later, Mario Gomez found himself one on one with Buffon. Although he was facing away from goal, he was just 6 yards out. Instead of swinging at the ball, he tried a cheeky back heel, which Buffon saved well and turned over for a corner. That would be the last contribution of Gomez for the game and the tournament as he tore a hamstring following a challenge. The miss would turn out to be costly too. An innocuous ball into the box was inexplicably handled by Boateng, his flailing arms punished for having made contact with the ball. Leonardo Bonucci stepped up and calmly equalized for Italy. A moment of madness from an otherwise solid defender had just cost Germany. The game drifted towards a draw as both teams started to protect what they had.

Extra time, too, wasn’t exciting. The Italians sat deep and protected their goal with might. They hardly made forays into the German half. Germany, for all their possession, failed to make Buffon work very hard or very frequently. Both teams seemed like they were hanging on for penalties.

The shootout itself, when it came about, was comical to start with, and nerve-wracking at the close. 6 penalties were missed out of the initial 10, including a hilarious effort by Italy’s Simeone Zaza, brought on at the end of extra time, just to take a penalty. Big guns from Germany, Ozil, Mueller and Schweinsteiger missed too. Pelle shot wide and Bonucci had his penalty saved this time. Both teams converted their next three penalties. In the ninth time of asking, Neuer saved from Darmian to give Germany the advantage. Jonas Hector converted the decisive penalty, although the ball squeezed under the body of Italian goalkeeper Buffon, who should’ve saved it. The Germans were through, and Italy, after an impressive tournament outdoing expectations were heading home.

My Prediction; Germany 2-1 Italy

Final Score: Germany 1-1 Italy, Germany qualify for Semi-Final after penalties

France vs Iceland

The favourites took on the giant-killers in this unlikely match-up. Iceland were fresh from the biggest win in their footballing history having ousted England in the last round. Frnace were looking to avoid the same fate as England.

The hosts took the game by the scruff of the neck and wringed Iceland’s neck in the process. Four first half goals, from Giroud, Pogba, Payet and Griezmann, broke Iceland’s spine and made them limp on the pitch. This was a flawless first half performance from France and they had just made a bold statement; a warning to others remaining in the tournament. Iceland stayed positive despite their four goal deficit. They hit back early in the second half with a goal from Sigthorsson, Engladn conquerer. France restored their four goal advantage soon after with a headed goal from Giroud. The forward was substituted immediately following the goal and received a rapturous send-off, although you could see he was disappointed at not being given the opportunity to get a hat-trick. Iceland had more possession following Frnace’s goal, trying to reduce the deficit again. France themselves could’ve added to their tally. In the final 10 minutes, Iceland scored again to make it 5-2. A testament to their spirit as they put on a show for their fans. That scoreline was how the match ended. France rolling ahead and Iceland getting warm appreciation for their part in lighting up the Euros.

My Prediction: France 1-1 Iceland, France to qualify for Semi-Final

Final Score: France 5-2 Iceland

A feast of football in the Quarter Finals, making up for some of the drab matches in the Group Stages. The knockout rounds have been entertaining for the most part. European Championships - Quarter Final - Part 2

We’re half-way through the Quarter Finals. Two contrasting matches with contrasting manner of victories. Safe to say my predictions held firm as far as the outcomes were concerned.

In this post I reflect on the first two Quarter Finals and look ahead to the next two, including the tie of the round and perhaps the tournament – Germany vs Italy.

Match Reviews

Poland vs Portugal

It was a question of which star man, Lewandowski or Ronaldo, would step up to the plate to push their team over the line. At the start, it was the Polish captain who got the upper hand, turning in a Grosicki cross within 2 minutes. His first goal in the tournament and it came at an important time. That’s inspirational for you. The game was end-to-end following Poland’s goal, with Poland having the better chances despite Portugal having more possession. Lewandowski and Milik both had shots at goal but could not hit the target. At the half hour mark, Renato Sanches received a ball on the edge of the area from the right wing, cut inside one defender and shot past Fabianski’s near post. The goalkeeper had no chance. Sanches was living up to his huge price tag. He had an excellent first half and is one for the future. There were more chances for both teams to increase their tally in the first half, but none of the forwards could take advantage.

The pace of the game slowed down in the second half. Ronaldo missed a one-on-one with the Polish goalkeeper. Played onside by the Polish left-back, the high ball played beyond the defense reached, but he failed to make contact with the swing of his left foot. The rest of the second half wasn’t as exciting as the first as both teams tried shooting from range, failing to break down the opposition’s defense. Extra time it was.

Ronaldo had another opportunity in the 6 yard box. A cross from the left wing reached him but he stepped over the ball, which hit the back of his leg and bounced away from goal. More goal attempts from both teams did not beat either keeper and a penalty shootout was the outcome. Players from both teams converted their first three spot-kicks. Nani converted the fourth for Portugal. Blaszczykowski saw his effort well saved by Patricio. Ironically, perhaps Poland’s player of the tournament had missed at this crucial juncture. Quaresma stepped up for his country’s last kick. Although the goalkeeper guessed the right way, he could not keep out the penalty and Portugal were through. They were through to the Semi-Final without having won a single game in 90 minutes!

My Prediction: Poland 0-1 Portugal

Wales vs Belgium

For all the expectation that accompanied Belgium’s campaign, it was Wales who’ve been the more complete team in this tournament. They had also taken 4 points off Belgium in the qualifying campaign, despite finishing behind them in that group. They were hoping for a repeat.

Belgium started off much better. In fact, it was ‘all hands on deck’ kind of defending from Wales, epitomized by a stunning triple block from a Belgian attack inside 10 minutes. Belgium kept possession well and prevented Wales from getting the ball to Bale to a large extent. Belgium’s efforts were justly rewarded in the 13^th minute. Hazard squared to Nainggolan from the left flank, who was almost 30 yards out. The midfielder took aim, coiled and fired a sizzling drive, which Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey could only get finger-tips to. The Welsh defense probably did not expect a shot to come in from that distance. Belgium pressed to increase the lead for the next 10 minutes or so. After this, Wales started keeping the ball better. They started to dominate possession and were now taking advantage of Belgium’s second tier defense. Veramelen’s suspension and Verthongen’s injury meant that the younger Lukaku and Meunier had come in at the last minute in the backline. Their rawness and lack of sharpness was evident. At the stroke of the half-hour mark, Ramsey put in a perfect corner, which found Ashley Williams unmarked in the center of the penalty box. The Welsh captain made no mistake heading in. The teams were level and Wales now had the momentum. There weren’t many more chances created in the last minutes of the first half, so the teams went in all square with all to play for.

Belgium made a surprising substitution by bringing on Fellaini at half-time to replace Carrasco. Wales continued where they left off. They pressed for the lead and it finally came 10 minutes into the second half. And what a goal it was. Aaron Ramsey, once again the supplier, found Hal Robson-Kanu with a grounded cross. The Welsh forward made to go left and then turned towards goal, with a silken touch which sent three defenders the wrong way simultaneously. He fired past Courtois and Wales were in front. The goal is one to see over and over again just for the incredible Cryuff turn! Belgium had no choice but to press for the winner. Wales spent the better part of the next 30 minutes foiling Belgian attacks. Fellaini looked like he could get into trouble for his antics. He got till the end on a just a yellow card. Sam Vokes replaced the potential match-winner Robson-Kanu with 10 minutes to go. In a rare Welsh counter-attack, Chris Gunter broke down the right. Vokes called for the cross and Gunter delivered a beauty. Vokes powerfully headed the ball past Courtois. Wales were two goals up and in dreamland. Germany vs Italy

This is the match of the tournament so far. It’s being said that the winner of this match will go on to lift the trophy. Whether that is the case is a topic for another day. This match will the battle between ruthless German attacking efficiency and clinical Italian defensive discipline. The Germans put in an imperial display against the Slovaks, who were outplayed from minute 1. They came out all guns blzaing and probably could’ve won by a bigger margin. The Italians outfoxed the Spanish, playing to their own strengths and hitting Spain with brilliant counter-attacks. They played with a similar tactic against Belgium and it had worked perfectly then too. Will it be third time lucky too for Conte and his tactically sound outfit, or will Low and his fluid German unit take the plaudits?  History says Italy have the advantage. But on such an occasion, history stands for nothing. I know I’ll be rooting for the Germans. I think whoever scores first will win this match. If the Italians take the lead, they’ll be incredibly difficult to break down afterwards. Going against my gut here and hoping for a German win.

France vs Iceland

Who would’ve predicted this as a Quarter Final three weeks back. Even when Iceland took a point past Portugal, people though it was a one-off. Then they almost beat Hungary, beat Austria with a last gasp winner and knocked over England in what has to be the greatest footballing moment in their history. Their thunderclap salute has perhaps become the most striking image of this tournament. The hosts will be wary of the wave of elation that Iceland have been riding. They themselves haven’t been at their fluent best. A couple of goals in the space of 3 minutes from Griezmann got them past the Irish in the previous round. France will be hoping to dominate the game from the start. It will be important for them to score early to silence the Icelandic support. In Griezmann and Payet, they have two in-form players and enough ammunition otherwise to get through. But football is a funny old game and this is a potential banana-skin for the hosts. I’m still going to go with a France win, but maybe not in normal time.
