FIFA Football World Cup 2018 - Round of 16, Match 1-4 Preview

The Knockout rounds of the 2018 World Cup begin from and we have a cracking set of matches lined up on the first day itself. So far we’ve seen just one of the big guns, Germany, being eliminated from the tournament, although a couple of others have looked shaky. The Group stage was a delight to watch and let’s hope that the Round of 16 plays out along the same lines.

In this article, I will preview the first four matches of the Round of 16, i.e. the matches to be played on Saturday and Sunday.

Match 1: France vs Argentina
Image result for france vs argentina

Two teams who were seen as possible final opponents meet in the Round of 16. Argentina barely made it through the Group stages, with a necessary win in their last group game against Nigeria. France haven’t been troubled as of yet, but they haven’t looked their fluent best either. Two narrow wins and a goalless draw haven’t caught the imagination of the public. Argentina looked a better unit, especially in midfield, after the personnel changes that were made in their last group game. Ever Banega made a huge difference to their link-up and build up play, also providing the assist for the first goal. One wonders why in a team so lacking creativity at the moment, a player like Dybala is kept on the bench, even when they desperately needed a late goal against Nigeria. The goal did come from an unlikely source, but some of the managerial decisions have been baffling as far as Argentina are concerned. France, for their part will be hoping to keep their momentum going. They will not care what the score-line reads as long as they get through. The prolific French forward line of Griezman, Giroud, Mbappe, Dembele, and the likes have not yet fired, but with the talent they have at hand, it will only take a moment for them to spring to life. The French themselves can be accused of playing players out of position, with Matuidi’s use as a winger of particular curiosity. Such a match between teams is too close to call, with this being the Knockout round on top of it. The French look to have the advantage on paper as well as on form, but it will take just a moment or two of magic from Argentina’s magician to change all that. I’ll still go with a narrow French win. A lot depends on which Argentina team shows up in this game.
Prediction: France 2 – 1 Argentina

Match 2: Uruguay vs Portugal
Image result for uruguay vs portugal

Super Saturday’s late kick-off sees two more equally matched teams square off for a place in the Quarter Finals. Uruguay have been as miserly as they come, conceding no goals and winning all three games in the Group. They come up against a determined, if sometimes shaky Portugal, who’ve done just enough in their group to see of the challenge of a couple of plucky underdogs. Portugal hung on late in the game in their last group game against Iran, where a late goal conceded would’ve meant them eliminated. Their talisman Ronaldo found form in the opening couple of games but his intensity has dropped off recently. Uruguay on the other hand have been playing some lucid football and their defence have been rock-solid. Portugal’s defence need to be wary of the double threat of Suarez and Cavani up front for Uruguay, both of whom have now got on the scoresheet in this tournament. There are a number of interesting clashes all across the pitch with those of Ronaldo vs Godin and Suarez vs Pepe possibly becoming crucial for both teams. Recent performances in similar tournaments would give the edge to Portugal in such a situation, but I will go against the grain and predict a win for Uruguay, with Suarez and Cavani being too hot to handle for the Portuguese defence.
Prediction: Uruguay 2 – 1 Portugal

Match 3: Spain vs Russia
Image result for spain vs russia

Spain have been uncharacteristically leaky in their defence, letting in 5 goals in the Group stage. They are still unbeaten, but managed to win only one of their three games. Russia started the tournament in superb fashion with two comfortable victories. They were brought back down to earth against Uruguay, suffering a 0-3 drubbing. Spain should have too much firepower in this game to get through, but need to be careful at the back against the Russian attack, who have looked menacing. Diego Costa and the impressive Isco are my picks for players who will be Spain’s main protagonists, with Costa especially always up and feisty for situations such as these. Russia will be hoping for more of the same from Golovin and Cheryshev, who’ve been revelations in this tournament. Spain should take this one comfortably, and it could become a repeat of the Uruguayan nightmare for Russia.
Prediction: Spain 3 – 0 Russia

Match 4: Croatia vs Denmark
Image result for croatia vs denmark

Croatia have looked the best team of the tournament, winning all three games, which included the scalp of mighty Argentina and a win against Iceland despite resting nine players! They will be favourites going into this game, and now have become a dark-horse for a very deep run into the tournament. Denmark rode their luck against Peru in the opening game to come out with a win, and draws in their remaining fixtures were enough to see them qualify. They rely heavily on Eriksen for their creativity and that will remain the same in this match. For me, it would be a surprise to see Denmark overcome Croatia in this game, but you can never count them out completely. Croatia’s midfield of Modric, Rakitic and Brozovic, and maybe Kovacic is likely to be the difference in this game. Denmark will need to be at their best and then some to try to control the midfield, or at least be solid at the back. I will go for a Croatia win, as I fail to see Denmark breaking down the solid backline, and there is just too much quality for the latter to keep out for 90 minutes.
Prediction: Croatia 2 – 0 Denmark

FIFA Football World Cup 2018 - Matchday 3: Group G-H Review

The group stage of the World Cup has now drawn to a close and we have identified the 16 countries progressing to the Knockout Rounds. The matches in the first stage were particularly exciting, and all teams ended up scoring at least two goals. The so-called minnows are now a lot more competitive than before and no match can now be considered a walkover, given what we’ve witnessed over the past two weeks.

There was no dearth of drama in the games played yesterday either. I will review the matches of Groups G and H in this article.

Group G

Match 5: England vs Belgium
Image result for belgium goal vs england

A combined total of 17 changes were made by the two managers in this group deciding game. Perhaps they were more inclined not to win the game, as the runner-up from this group looks to have an easier route to the semi-final. Both teams had chances early on but lacked the clinical finishing which had seen them both score 8 goals in their first two games. Once again, there was a chance of fair play deciding the group winner, as the two teams were tied on all parameters before the same. Belgium took it upon themselves to fall behind in Fair Play, putting in crunching tackles, for which the referee had no option but to show a card. The first half remained goalless but the there was an unlikely goal scored early on in the second. Adnan Janujaz took his chance in the team and grabbed a goal with a wonderful curling effort. Whether it was the best decision to score is a matter of a separate discussion. Michy Batshuayi became an overnight meme with his goal celebration! Rashford a glorious opportunity to equalize but Courtois denied him one-on-one with a fingertip save. Belgium did a couple of late chances, with Mertens’ long range effort well saved by Pickford. Fellaini had another chance with virtually the last kick off the game but he only found the side netting. Belgium top the group, but England will probably be the happier side taking near-future into consideration. It won’t be a walk in the park though.
Final Score: England 0 – 1 Belgium

Match 6: Panama vs Tunisia
Image result for tunisia goal vs panama

Two teams who were already eliminated but would be hoping to go home with some pride restored. To be fair Tunisia gave a good account of themselves, and nearly got a point out of their game against England. Panama were just happy to have got their first ever World Cup goal against the same opponent in their last game. Tunisia made early inroads into their opposition’s box but could not make the breakthrough. They went behind via yet another own goal by an African team, as Jose Luiz Rodriguez’s shot deflected off Meriah and beat the goalkeeper. The Tunisian attacks kept on coming but they had to wait nearly 20 minutes for the equalizer. They had two big opportunities in the mean-time but were denied by some dogged defending and goalkeeping. The goal came when Khazri found an unmarked Ben Youssef at the end of a low cross. The wide-man made no mistake and gave the Tunisians a well-deserved goal. Tunisia had a chance to take the lead just a minute later, but Ben Youssef could not beat the ‘keeper one-on-one. Khazri put his side into the lead 15 minutes later, running onto a Haddadi square ball across the box and tapping into an open net. They deserved to be in front by virtue of their performance. Panama had a chance to equalize very late on, but a good cross from the left managed to just evade three attackers and was only picked up on the other flank. Nothing came of it in the end. That’s how it ended, and Tunisia had finally picked up some points which they thoroughly deserved.
Final Score: Panama 1 – 2 Tunisia

Group H
Match 5: Japan vs Poland
Related image

Japan needed just a point to progress, irrespective of what happened in the other game. They could progress even with a loss but would need Colombia to lose or to beat Senegal by a good margin. Poland had only pride to play for, having already been eliminated. The teams exchanged attacks in the first half without breaking the deadlock. Grosicki came the closest with a well-positioned header, but Kawashima pulled off a stunning save to deny him. Jan Bednarek piled on the pressure on Japan, scoring from a volleyed effort after a free-kick. Japan needed to score, otherwise their fate was out of their hands. They tried but they seemed to lack the drive which saw them perform so well in their previous matches. Lewandowski nearly put the game to bed in the 74th minute, but his sliced effort went over the bar. He should’ve scored having got goal-side of his marker. Kawashima pulled off another superb save a few minutes later, Makino’s attempted clearance from Grosicki’s cross nearly ended up in his own net if not for his ‘keeper. Poland backed off in the final ten minutes, allowing the game to drift to a 1-0 result. The reason will be clear in the review of the next match…
Final Score: Japan 0 – 1 Poland

Match 6: Senegal vs Colombia
Image result for colombia goal vs senegal

A lot of permutations were possible from different results and score-lines from this game. Whoever won this game would go through, no questions asked. Senegal needed just a point to surely qualify. Colombia needed a point to have a chance of qualifying, and hope that Japan would lose (which they did). Both teams struggled to get a foothold in the match early on, with a lot of mis-passes and fouls dominating proceedings. Colombia had the first real chance after 10 minutes, but Quintero’s free-kick was smartly punched away by N’Diaye. Senegal were awarded a penalty five minutes later but it was overturned after VAR intervened. Davinson Sanchez looked to take the ball first before bringing down Mane, and the former was enough reason for the referee to reverse his decision. Colombia lost James Rodriguez to what looked like an ankle injury mod-way through the half. Senegal looked the more threatening for the rest of the first half, but they couldn’t really test Ospina. Niang picked up a yellow card in the second half which meant he would miss the next game. Off a corner in the 74th minute, and similar to the Poland game, Yerry Mina rose highest at the near post and headed home from close range. Colombia were in dreamland, and were leading the group. Senegal and Japan were locked on points, with Japan already trailing to Poland in the other game. The two teams were tied on points, goal difference, goals scored and had drawn their game. The next factor to decide second place in the group was fair play. Japan were leading this statistic 4 to 6. Senegal were thus going to crash out of the cup unless they scored or Poland scored again against Japan. Poland took it easy for the conclusion of the match, so the Senegalese needed to find a solution themselves. Just a minute after going behind, Niang forced a save from Ospina, but the ball was directly at the Colombian goalkeeper. Ismaila Sa skied a glorious opportunity at the far post, he was unmarked and had enough time to get his shot on target. That would prove to be the last real chance for the African nation, as their challenge petered out. The combination of results in this group meant that Colombia had won the group, and Japan would join them, Senegal’s fate being sealed by Fair Play rules, the first ever instance of a team being eliminated from the World Cup for the same!

Final Score: Senegal 0 – 1 Colombia

FIFA Football World Cup 2018 - Matchday 3: Group E-F Review, Group G-H Preview

The shock of all shocks took place last night as Germany were eliminated from the World Cup after losing their final group game to South Korea. This World Cup keeps churning out incredible stories every day. This is probably the best Group Stage I’ve ever seen, and this is the sixth World Cup that I have followed!

I wrap up all the storied form Groups E and F, also checking in on the performance of the other big team on show yesterday, Brazil. I will wrap up this article with the Previews for Groups G and H.

Match 5: Serbia vs Brazil

The heavyweights needed at least a point from this game to ensure qualification. Serbia had shown to be a solid outfit in their previous matches, and only a second half slump against Switzerland sees them in a must-win situation in this game. Brazil were the much better team in the first half, cutting open the Serbian defense on a number of occasions. It took 36 minutes but their persistence was rewarded when a perfect Coutinho through ball found Pualinho who dinked the bouncing ball over the goalkeeper. Serbia started the second half better and made Alisson work on the hour mark. Rukavina’s cross was palmed away but into a dangerous area by Alisson, but Mitrovic could only head the rebound straight at Thiago Silva with the goalkeeper out of position. Alisson recovered to grab the rebound off his own defender. And it was Silva who seasled the result in favour of Brazil a few minutes later, rising highest at the near post to head in a Neymar corner. Neymar did find time to fall comically in the match, performing and multiple lateral twist in the process. Some things never change! Brazil were through and Serbia were eliminated.
Final Score: Serbia 0 – 2 Brazil

Match 6: Switzerland vs Costa Rica
Image result for switzerland vs costa rica

Switzerland needed to win to have a chance of topping the group, but only a draw would suffice to qualify irrespective of the other result. If Serbia lost, they wouldn’t even need that! They nearly went behind in the 6th minute when Borges found himself unmarked in the box. His header was fantastically saved at full stretch by Sommer. And the Costa Rican onslaught continued with Colindres hitting the bar from the left wing, with Sommer off his line. It would’ve been one of the goals of the tournament had it gone in. Switzerland made their opponents pay just after half-time when Dzemaili smashed home from close range unchallenged, after a header down by Embolo. Costa Rica finally got the goal they deserved in the 56th minute via a header from Kendall Watson, Joel Campbell’s delivery from the corner provided the assist. Costa Rica took control of the match going ahead, but it was their opponents who had the next chance in the 78th minute. Drmic saw his excellent header come back off the bar. Drmic would score 10 minutes later, as he got onto the end of a low Zakaria cross and slotted into the bottom corner. Costa Rica did not give up however and were awarded a penalty in the third minute of injury time. Bryan Ruiz’s penalty hit the bar but the ball ricocheted off Sommer’s back and into the net. The scores were tied and there was barely time to get going again and 2-2 is how it ended. Switzerland were through to the Knockouts as the second placed team in the group.

Group F

Match 5: Mexico vs Sweden
Image result for sweden goal vs mexico

All eyes were on Sweden to see if they could keep the pressure up on Germany in the battle for the qualification from the group. The Mexicans themselves were not assured of a place in the next round yet, but only needed a point to progress. Mexico had a glorious chance to take the lead in the 17th minute, but Layun put his effort wide of the post from just inside the penalty box. Sweden themselves nearly converted from a corner but Ochoa saved excellently to keep the scores level. The Swedes came alive in the second half and ripped Mexico to shreds. They took the in the 50th minute as Augustinsson volleyed home after Claesson had sliced his initial shot. Sweden were awarded a penalty just after the hour mark. Captain Granqvist stepped up once again and doubled his country’s lead. Mexico were now in trouble in terms of goal difference as Sweden just gone past them. A one goal win for Germany in the other game would be enough. Things went from bad to worse for the Mexicans as Alvarez’s attempted clearance from a long throw-in rebounded back off his standing leg and into his own net. Sweden had secured their path to the next round but it was a nervy wait for Mexico to find out the result from the other match. After having played so well in their opening two games, the possibility of the latter’s elimination was still quite high.
Final Score: Mexico 0 – 3 Sweden

Match 6: South Korea vs Germany
Related image

Germany had to better or equal Sweden’s result and they would qualify. South Korea themselves were still in with a small chance of going, but would need to win this match and Sweden would need to lose to Mexico, and then goal differences would come in. Germany had the first shaky moment of the game when Neuer dropped a seemingly harmless free-kick in front of his goal, but recovered just in time to punch it away before Son could pounce. Son had another chance five minutes later but blasted well wide from about 12 yards. Hummels displayed neat foot-work to get a shot away after a corner but it was smothered by South Korean goalkeeper Jo Hyun-Woo. Much like their last matches, Germany dominated possession but failed to break down their opponents. Goretzka had a point blank header saved by Jo at the start of the second half. And the near-misses kept coming for the Germans who could not seem to find the target from their attempts. On another day, Mats Hummels could’ve bagged a hat-trick from the number of headers he sent off target from in and around the six yard box. As it is with such occasions, Germany’s misses were punished severely, and they went behind in injury time from a corner, Kim putting the ball into the net. Offside was the originally the decision from the linesman, but it was overruled by VAR which clearly showed that the last touch had come off Kroos and not a Korean player, so it could not be offside. Germany were heading out. This was confirmed, if any more was needed as an advanced Neuer was dispossessed in the Korean half. Ju Se-Jong launched a long ball which Son ran onto, and with no defender in sight, scored the easiest goal of the tournament. VAR was once again referred for offside but the goal stood. The world champions were bowing out and this result meant that they ended up last in their group! This was also the first time they had been beaten by an Asian opponent at the World Cup. Football truly is amazing!
Final Score: South Korea 2 – 0 Germany

Match 5: England vs Belgium

With the qualifiers from this group already decided, and both these teams having done so, the question now remains as to who will top the group. However, given events in other groups, the runner-up of the group will have an easier passage in the Knockouts. Will it really become a game of ‘After you”? Both teams are likely to make changes and perhaps our best hope of seeing a competitive fixture is for those coming into the team to make a claim for themselves going ahead. Lukaku will be a big miss for Belgium, but will England be brave enough to try to want to win the group? I’m on the fence for this and predict a dull affair and a draw. A draw would mean both teams would be locked on same points, same goal difference and same goal scored, and even on head-to-head. The decision would then go to fair play with whoever has collected the fewer number of cards coming out on top. England currently have two while Belgium trail here with three. Hopefully, this will not be the deciding factor and my prediction will be proved wrong.
Prediction: England 0 – 0 Belgium

Match 6: Panama vs Tunisia
Image result for panama vs tunisia

Panama rejoiced scoring a goal against England and they’ll hope to add to their tally in this match for pride. On paper, Tunisia should be too strong for the minnows, but as we’ve seen repeatedly in this tournament, football is not played on paper. However, the North African nation should win, Panama have to overcome suspensions too. Tunisia have fared decently in the tournament but the competition has just been too strong. I predict them to bow out with a win.
Prediction: Panama 0 – 2 Tunisia

Group H

Match 5: Japan vs Poland
Image result for japan vs poland

Poland have surprisingly been eliminated but they will want to exit the tournament on a high. This could prove bad news for Japan who are very much in the hunt to qualify. The Japanese need a point to qualify, whatever be the result of the other match. They can lose and yet still go through if Colombia lose. If Colombia win or draw, it will come down to goal difference, provided Japan themselves lose. The Japanese have showed incredible fighting spirit in the tournament, exhibited brightly in their last game against Senegal where they came back from a goal down twice to draw. Poland have been extremely disappointing, losing both their games when they were arguably the favourites to qualify from this group. Their quest at some redemption might be bad news for Japan, and I’m predicting them to win this.
Prediction: Japan 1 – 3 Poland

Match 6: Senegal vs Colombia
Image result for senegal vs colombia

Whoever wins this game qualifies, no questions. Colombia need at least a draw to have a chance. Senegal need just a point to confirm qualification. This match has the potential to become one of the matches of the tournament so far. Both teams have shown attacking intent and have scored goals. Colombia came back well from losing to Japan in their first game, by defeating and knocking out Poland in their last match. Senegal did the same to Poland, and had twice taken the lead against Japan before settling for a draw. A very difficult match to call, I can’t help but get the feeling that the momentum is with Colombia from their last game. James Rodriguez back in the side was a huge boost for them in the last game, and he could prove vital once again. I will predict a narrow win for the South Americans, but both teams will qualify regardless, Senegal by goal difference over Japan.

Prediction: Senegal 1 – 2 Colombia

FIFA Football World Cup 2018 - Matchday 3: Group C-D Review, Group E-F Preview

Halfway through Matchday 3 and the good times keep on rolling at the World Cup. This has been one of the most exciting Group Stages the World Cup has seen in a long time, with the fates of teams hanging by the balance till the last minute. It was no different in one group yesterday, while the other group slipped into anti-climax. I review the matches from Groups C and D in today’s article. I will also oreview tonight’s games for Groups E and F.

Previews

Group C

Match 5: Australia vs Peru
Image result for carrillo goal vs australia

Australia went into this game with a slim chance of making it to the next round. Peru have impressed and entertained but find themselves already out of the running. The latter got off to the better start. Andre Carrillo volleyed in from a Guerrero cross with 18 minutes on the clock, a superb finish from the right winger from a difficult angle. Australia pressed for the equalizer, and Rogic nearly got it after dribbling past four defenders, but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper who kept it out. Some desperate defending kept out the Australians again a few minute later. Peru, like in the first, started the second half better and extended their lead in the 50th minute. Captain Guerrero scored this time after having assisted the first. Australia’s slim hopes were slipping away. Australia had a good chance to get one back 10 minutes later from a corner but Behich’s shot was agonizingly wide. Nearly the same situation repeated a minute later, and this time it was a Peruvian block in front of goal which kept the Aussies out. That is as good as it got for the latter, as their challenge fizzled away. Peru took home a deserved victory from the tournament and Australia once again failed to get out of their group.
Final Score: Australia 0 – 2 Peru

Match 6: Denmark vs France
Image result for denmark vs france

France put some early pressure on the Danes, with Hernandez cutting in from the left, leading to a shot from Giroud which was saved, and a penalty shout from Hernandez which was turned down. Denmark had a chance at the half-hour mark, but Mandanda closed down Eriksen who had ran past his defender and nearly reached a through ball from the left wing. The best both teams did for the next half an hour or so were shots from distance, one of which was spilled by Mandanda but he recovered to gather. And the trend of long range efforts continued for France as Denmark sat back and played for the draw. Fekir had two efforts but they didn’t go in. In injury time, Mbappe made a mazy run through the Danish defense with the help of a couple of lucky deflections but could not find a teammate in the box. That’s it remained, meaning that this was the first 0-0 draw of the tournament. It’s taken 38 games! Both teams qualify from the group.
Final Score: Denmark 0 – 0 France

Group D

Match 5: Iceland vs Croatia
Image result for croatia goal vs iceland

Croatia were already through but Iceland had all to play for. Croatia rested nine players, which would’ve come as further motivation for their opponents. Iceland came out firing, with a couple of early chances, which also included some sloppy defending from Croatia. Subasic made an acrobatic save from Gunnarsson’s curling effort. Croatia finally got into the game in the second half. Badelj hit the bar from more than 30 yards out with the goalkeeper beaten. And it was Badelj who broke the deadlock just a minute late with a fine half-volley from a difficult height. Iceland nearly equalized immediately. Subasic tried to punch a corner but missed but recovered to save Ingason’s goal-bound header. Ingason hit the bar from the resulting corner. Iceland finally got level in the 75th minute, after being awarded a penalty for handball. Sigurdsson made no mistake this time, having missed from the spot against Nigeria. Iceland needed another goal to keep their hopes alive, and having seen them in the past, one could never count them out. However, it wasn’t to be for the tiny island nation as they were dispossessed in defense by Badelj, who set up Perisic. The latter scored into the far corner to send Iceland home, and confirm Croatia winning the group.
Final Score: Iceland 1 – 2 Croatia

Match 6: Nigeria vs Argentina
Image result for argentina goal vs nigeria

Argentina were inexplicably on the brink of elimination after their defeat to Croatia. They had to win this match, and that too by a goal more than Iceland. As we know, the latter could not pull it off but Nigeria were on 3 points and only needed a draw in this one. Much like their first match against Iceland, Argentina started off in determined fashion, causing some problems for the Nigerian defense. On 14 minutes, Banega played a superb cross-field lob which Messi controlled with his chest, set it up with two further touches and shot past the goalkeeper with his ‘weaker’ right foot. Messi had arrived at this World Cup and the fans were going crazy. The game slowed down a bit, with both teams struggling to take control of the midfield. Messi hit the post from a free-kick, which the goalkeeper got fingertips to. That was actually a very good save from the latter. Nigeria were awarded a penalty at the start of the second half when Mascherano brought down Balogun. Perhaps it was a soft decision, but the Argentine defender did have his arms wrapped around his Nigerian counterpart, who rather easily fell to the floor. Victor Moses stepped up and converted and now Nigeria were going through. Ighalo had a glorious opportunity to get his team ahead after some loose defending by Rojo in the box. The Nigerian forward fired wide, but then there were massive appeals for handball against Rojo. The replays showed that the ball did hit Rojo’s hand, after he headed it himself but the referee deemed it unintentional. This was similar to the penalty given against Portugal against Iran just one day earlier, and this inconsistency is what gets fans on the edge. All things said and done, Ighalo should really have scored anyway. 10 minutes later, with Nigeria having absorbed a lot of pressure in the mean-time, Mercado found space on the right wing and swung in a cross to the center of the area. Rojo, of all people, was the one that got on the end of it and volleyed it into the bottom corner. Fortune had turned again and once again, Argentina were heading to the knockouts. Nigeria could not come back for a second time and somehow Argentina had held on and were moving on.
Final Score: Nigeria 1 – 2 Argentina

Match 5: Mexico vs Sweden
Image result for mexico vs sweden

Mexico, though not already though to the knockouts, will see this match great opportunity for them to win the group and possibly avoid Brazil in the next round, who are expected to win Group F (more on them later). All they need is a draw. Sweden are tied for second with Germany and will also be looking for a positive result. As such, we can expect an open encounter, as both teams will look to go for the win. If Mexico play like they did against Germany, they can very well exploit the gaps that might open up when Sweden press forward. The partnership of Lozano, Hernandez and Layun up front has been very fruitful for the Mexicans and they will be looking for more goals in this match. Sweden were very unlucky to not even get a point from their match against Germany, wand will be under pressure here. They will need to be positive once again and play much like they did in the first half against Germany. I think both teams will cancel each other out, with goals for them both.
Prediction: Mexico 1 – 1 Sweden

Match 6: South Korea vs Germany
Image result for south korea vs germany

The defending champions came back from the brink against Sweden and now find themselves in a match they will expect to win. Having said that, they were expecting to ease through this group but that hasn’t happened. South Korea, despite two losses are still out of the tournament. If they win here and Mexico beat Sweden, with goal differences in their favour, the Asian nation can still qualify. It looks unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Germany looked to have found their groove in the second half against Sweden. They created a lot of chances, and got away with their wastefulness. The defense frailties also came back and they would need to be wary not to repeat the same. South Korea have not played well so far, but they have enough to trouble the German defense. I do believe the world champions should have enough quality to win this easily and qualify from the group, but maybe only in second place.
Prediction: South Korea 0 – 3 Germany

Group F
Match 5: Serbia vs Brazil
Image result for serbia vs brazil

Brazil will have a task on their hands when they take on the solid Serbian team. The latter will be utterly disappointed to have let their lead slip and eventually lose against Switzerland. Still, they have 3 points on the board and are very in with a chance to qualify. Only way to do that though is by beating the formidable Brazil. The South Americans relied on two very late goals to overcome Costa Rica and will be hoping for a simpler passage in this match. That might be difficult as the Serbian midfield has been very good in both their matches. This game will probably come down to whether Brazil can break down their opponents’ structured team, with the latter likely to rely on counters to break through Brazil’s sometimes shaky defense. I expect another cracker of a match, akin to what we saw in the Argentina vs Nigeria game last night. I will go with a shock and predict a narrow win for Serbia in this game.
Prediction: Serbia 2 – 1 Brazil

Match 6: Switzerland vs Costa Rica
Image result for switzerland vs costa rica

Switzerland need just a point to qualify while Costa Rica have been eliminated. The Swiss showed considerable resolve to come back from a deficit against Serbia and are now favourites to qualify from the group. Whether they finish first or second is not entirely in their own hands. Costa Rica did well to keep Brazil out for 90 minutes but haven’t looked like a scoring in the tournament. I’d be very surprised if they get anything from this game and will predict a comfortable Swiss victory.
Prediction: Switzerland 2 – 0 Costa Rica

Match 5: Saudi Arabia vs Egypt
Image result for al-dawsari goal vs egypt

Mohamed Salah scored with Egypt’s first real attack, although it did come after 22 minutes. The EPL’s highest scorer showed the kind of touch that got him all those goals, running onto a long ball from El-Said and chipping the Saudi goalkeeper. He reached 50 goals for the season with club and country with this goal. Salah ran in behind the opposition defense once again, was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, chipped him but put his effort wide to the disbelief of most the people watching. Saudi Arabia were awarded a somewhat fortuitous penalty after a cross hit Fathi’s trailing arm. The defender was very close to the shot and wasn’t at all trying to stop the ball with his arm. Justice was served when El-Hadary saved Fahad Al Muwallad’s penalty excellently. Saudi Arabia did find the equalizer in first half injury time, 6th minute of it, after they received yet another penalty. It was referred to VAR but the original decision of awarding a penalty stood. Al-Faraj stepped up this time and converted. The game lost most of its fizz in the second half, with the occasional chance, the best coming from Al Moqahwi’s header which was turned over the bar by the keeper. Egypt were dealt a hammer blow and fell behind in the 95th minute. Salem Al-Dawsari found space and placed a volley in the far corner. The Saudi’s had restored some pride, but for Egypt, this was a nightmare tournament.
Final Score: Saudi Arabia 2 – 1 Egypt

Match 6: Uruguay vs Russia
Image result for cavani goal vs russia

All eyes were on the hosts after their superb start to the tournament. Uruguay were expected to be as miser as ever and this was touted as a good battle between Russian flair and Uruguayan solidity. What it turned out was a stark reminder of just how much Russia have to do to get past the Round of 16, having already qualified. They fell behind in the 10th minute from a Suarez free-kick from the edge of the box. Cheryshev got a chance to equalize two minutes later after a good cushioned header from Dzyuba, but the former hit the shot directly at Muslera who saved easily, and Godin cleared the follow-up. Diego Laxalt then saw his long range effort deflect in off the unlucky Cheryshev. It was an uphill task now for the hosts. Uruguay had more chances to score, and only a combination of Muslera and last-gasp defending kept them from extending their lead. It got worse for the hosts, as Smolnikov was sent off for a second bookable offense. The hosts had lost their verve and were quickly losing their heads. Not much happened in the second half, as Russia failed to mount much of challenge with a man down. Akinfeev saved spectacularly from Rodriguez in injury time. The resulting penalty led to Uruguay’s third goal, Cavani showed the most desire to get on the end of the rebound from Godin’s header, and finally scored his first goal of the tournament. The Uruguayans were coming good at the right time, and would be a tough opponent for whoever faces them in the Round of 16. A lot of reflection needs to be done for the hosts, as they faltered in the face of the first real challenge they faced.
Final Score: Uruguay 3 – 0 Russia

Group B
Match 5: Iran vs Portugal
Image result for quaresma goal vs iran

Iran held their own against the fancied Europeans, although the latter had quite a few openings to score in the early exchanges. Ricardo Quaresma finally gave Portugal the lead just before half-time with a superb outside-of-the-foot shot from outside the box which nestled into the top corner. Portugal were awarded a penalty, after a delayed deliberation with VAR, inside the first 10 minutes of the second half. Ronaldo stepped but inexplicably couldn’t convert, hitting too close to the goalkeeper, whho guessed the right way. It’s been a bad World Cup for superstar penalty takers! Iran retained their plucky self from the Spain game, and didn’t give up till the end. Ronaldo got away with only a yellow card after replays showed him elbowing Pouraliganji. VAR somehow was not conclusive enough to change the decision. In injury time, they were awarded an extremely harsh penalty Azmoun’s header hit the defender’s arm from barely a yard away. Iran leveled with Ansarifard scoring the penalty. Taremi missed a glorious opportunity to score again just a minute later, finding the side net instead. That was the last roll of the dice as Portugal held on and qualified. Iran can leave the World Cup with their heads held high.
Final Score: Iran 1 – 1 Portugal

Match 6: Spain vs Morocco
Image result for morocco goal vs spain

Morocco got off to a dream start, taking advantage of some uncharacteristic Spanish sloppiness, with the ball picked up by Boutaib on the half-line, and he ran through towards goal scored through De Gea’s legs. This was the fourth shot on target that the Spanish stopper had faced in the World Cup, and he had not stopped any! Five minutes later, Spain broke through the Moroccan defense with some characteristic short passing interplay between Isco, Costa and Iniesta, with Isco finally scoring from a Iniesta cutback. Boutaib once again got in behind the Spanish defense in the 25th minute, taking advantage of the no offside rule from throw-ins. This time though, he couldn’t convert one-on-one against De Gea, who finally stopped a goal bound shot. Morocco came agonizingly close to taking the lead in the 55th minute when Amrabat’s fierce long-range effort came out off the bottom of the bar. De Gea hadn’t moved. The Spanish defense really struggled in this game, with Ramos having an off day, and they were punished from an 81st minute corner as En-Nesyri heading in. If only Morocco had not already been eliminated; they were hugely impressive here. Spain did equalize again in injury time, but it wasn’t without controversy. The assistant had flagged for offside on goal-scorer Aspas, but the decision was reversed by VAR and the goal awarded. The Moroccans were furious with the decision and made their feelings known both during and after the game. It was a hugely exciting match, and like Iran, Morocco can too go back home with their pride intact.
Final Score: Spain 2 – 2 Morocco

Match 5: Australia vs Peru
Image result for australia vs peru

One team who’ve been hugely determined not to lose, while the other has shown enough flair to have progressed on the next stage, but unfortunately have already been eliminated. Australia drew with Denmark to keep their hopes alive, after nearly pulling off the same result against France in the first game. Peru gave the world some exciting football but inexperience showed in both their games. With Peru having nothing to play for, I believe Australia will have enough determination to get a positive result. I don’t expect too many goals in this game either.
Prediction: Australia 1 – 0 Peru

Match 6: Denmark vs France
Image result for denmark vs france

Normally, I would’ve predicted a draw in this game, which would mean secure qualification for both. However, given that France haven’t been at their fluent best in their opening two games, despite getting the desired results, they will be hoping to show what they are capable of in this game. They will also be looking to get back at the Danes for their coaches strong remarks prior to the tournament. So far, Olivier Giroud has been France’s most influential player, and he will once again be the same against a solid Danish defense. It remains to be seen whether the flair players in the form of Mbappe, Griezman and Pogba can finally turn on the style in this tournament. I predict a narrow win for France which will make the battle for second in the group very interesting.
Prediction: Denmark 0 – 1 France

Group D
Match 5: Iceland vs Croatia
Image result for iceland vs croatia

After an incredible opening performance getting a draw against Argentina, Iceland fell away in their game against Nigeria and slumped to defeat. This puts them in a very difficult position in terms of qualifying from the group as they’re up against perhaps the most accomplished looking in this World Cup so far. Croatia were ruthless in their destruction of Argentina and will look to end the group on a high. They have already qualified and a point is required to ensure first place in the group. A point won’t be enough for Iceland however. As such, I expect this to be an open attacking game, with Iceland looking to take their opponents head-on. This will definitely open up opportunities for the excellent Croatians on the counter, so I do expect goals here. I’m going to go with a surprise result and a narrow Iceland win in this game, mostly because the Euros showed us that they are a team that should never be counted out till the end. The manager had hinted at resting some player for this game, and that could also be a factor.
Prediction: Iceland 1 – 0 Croatia

Match 6: Nigeria vs Argentina
Image result for nigeria vs argentina 2018

Very few would’ve predicted that the group would stand the way it does right now, when these two teams would face off. But here we are, and going by the last outings for the two teams, Nigeria indeed look to be the favourites to get a desirable result from this game. The Argentinians need to pull up their socks, change their starters and get their tactics in order if they are to keep themselves in contention to qualify. They have to win, there’s no two ways about it, and maybe that will get them fired up for this game. The Nigerians have already come out with the mind-games ahead of this match, and it is clear they are up for the challenge. This could become one of the games of the tournament if both teams show up, but it’s hard for me to pick a winner. I will go with a scoring draw, and yes, that would mean Argentina’s elimination.

Prediction: Nigeria 1 – 1 Argentina

Match 3: Belgium vs Tunisia
Image result for belgium goal vs tunisia

Belgium started off where they left off against Panama, winning an early penalty after Hazard was brought down. Tunisia were unfortunate as the contact looked to be just outside the box. Hazard converted easily. In the 16th minute, Lukaku ran onto a pass from Hazard and slotted it past the goalkeeper for their second. Dylan Bronn halved Tunisia’s deficit 5 minutes later, with a glancing header after a Khazri free-kick. Lukaku restored Belgium’s two goal lead in first half injury time with a smart dink over the prone goalkeeper. The second half continued in much the same vain, Hazard skillfully controlled a ball before rounding the goalkeeper and scoring into an empty net. Michy Batshuayi scored in injury after having around five efforts not go in via the post, the bar or a goal-line clearance. He looked to be almost cursed before finally grabbing this deserved goal. Tunisia got a consolation even deeper into injury time, Khazri scoring this time. Belgium were well on their way to the Round of 16.
Final Score: Belgium 5 – 2 Tunisia

Match 4: England vs Panama
Image result for lingard goal vs panama

England were buoyed after their injury-time win against Tunisia. They were overwhelming favourites for this match and they did not disappoint. The rout started with John Stones heading in from a corner after 8 minutes. Sterling was brought down in the box. England were awarded a penalty and Kane converted. Good interplay between Sterling and Lingard led to the latter scoring a sublime finish for England’s third. The game looked to be over in the 36th minute. The pain continued to intensify for Panama as Stones got onto the end of a free-kick after the ball pinged around in the penalty box for a while and made it 4-0 a few minutes later. A bout of wrestling later, England were awarded another penalty after both Stones and Kane were laid flat. Kane converted once again. This was getting embarrassing for the Panamanians and their physical play was becoming farcical. Kane completed his hat-trick in the second half, although he did know anything about it. Loftus-Cheek’s long range effort deflected off the English captain’s heel and found the net. No one was really complaining. Kane became the leading goal-scorer of the tournament. Panama made history in the 78th minute, Felipe Baloy scored their first ever goal in World Cup history, from a Avila free-kick. The fans went wild and it was evident how important this moment was for them. That’s how it ended. England were through to the next round, and this result meant Belgium were too. Panama bow out, joining Tunisia. The former had their goal and Baloy would hold that record for ever, and seemed to fill them all with satisfaction.
Final Score: England 6 – 1 Panama

Match 3: Japan vs Senegal
Image result for inui goal vs senegal

The most exciting group in the World Cup lived up to its billing. Japan and Senegal were winners in first match and a win here would mean they would be on the verge of qualifying. Senegal were the better team for the first 20 minutes. They got the goal they were after on 11 minutes. Kawashima parried a knee height shot that he should’ve been collecting and the ball ricocheted off Mane and back into the net. The Senegalese captain didn’t know a lot about it but he would surely take that. Japan got into the game after the first 20 minutes. In the 35th minute, Nagatomo excellently controlled a cross field ball by Sakai, beat two defenders with his first touch and laid it off to Inui. The latter positioned and curled the ball around two defenders and beyond the diving N’Diaye to level the scores. Senegal started the second half better but it was Japan who wasted a glorious opportunity to take the lead on the hour mark. Osako failed to make contact with a Shibasaki cross with the goal gaping and having got the better of his marker. Inui hit the bar with a curling shot from the left edge of the penalty box. Senegal were hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Senegal punished their wasteful opponents with Moussa Wague running onto a Youssuf Sabaly cross, which was deflected onto his path by Niang, and scored masterfully into the roof of the net. Japan did not give up however. In the 78th minute, a cross by Osako was missed by N’Diaye as he came to punch it. Inui sent the ball back across goal from the other flank. Keisuke Honda was free in the 6 yard box and scored. For the second time, Japan had pulled back their deficit. That’s how it ended after an open end-to-end encounter, which meant that both teams were now on four points.
Final Score: Japan 2 – 2 Senegal

Match 4: Poland vs Colombia
Image result for colombia goal vs poland

The result in the other game meant that if there was a result in this game, the losing team would be eliminated from the World Cup. Poland were the more favoured team but Colombia did not allow them to settle in this game. Although the first goal took time, it was coming for some time after a well worked short-corner was headed home by Mina in the 40th minute. The returning James Rodriguez providing the assist. Polan had a chance to equalize, when Lewandowski controlled a ball over the top and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He could only strike against the ‘keeper, to be fair, he was at full stretch and had an acute angle to aim for as the goalkeeper had come out of his line. 10 minutes later, Colombia more or less put the game to bed when Quintero played in Falcao who made no mistake in finding the net. James Rodriguez turned provider again, setting up Cuadrado for Colombia’s third. The game was over and Poland was going home. This was a statement of intent from the South Americans and sets up a mouth-watering clash with Senegal up next.
Final Score: Poland 0 – 3 Colombia

Match 5: Saudi Arabia vs Egypt
Image result for saudi arabia vs egypt

With both teams heading home after this game, there is nothing to play for in this match, other than pride. Egypt’s tumultuous campaign may have gotten worse, with rumours circulating about Salah considering retirement after there was controversy of his meeting with Chechnyan leader Ramzan Kadyrov. So maybe this is the last time we’ll get to see him in and Egypt shirt! For the Saudis, they were much improved against Uruguay than their first game, but it still wasn’t enough to get any points. Egypt were poor against Russia. Both teams will want to sign off in style. I can see an inspired performance from Salah and his teammates in this one to pull off a narrow win.
Prediction: Saudi Arabia 1 – 2 Egypt

Match 6: Uruguay vs Russia
Image result for uruguay vs russia

Russia have bene the surprise package of this tournament after they were favourites to be eliminated in this stage. They’re the joint highest scorers in the tournament so far. Uruguay have played no nonsense football, winning two games with a 1-0 score-line. Russia will be more motivated for this game and to win the group in their home World Cup. However, I do think that Uruguay have enough quality to not lose this match, and am going for a draw here. This would mean Russia will win the group.
Prediction: Uruguay 1 – 1 Russia

Group B

Match 5: Iran vs Portugal
Image result for iran vs portugal

The unlikely scenario of Iran defeating Portugal and progressing to the next round at the latter’s expense is still very much a possibility. The Iranians played as a solid defensive unit against Spain and expect more of the same here. Portugal huffed and puffed to get the better of Morocco, who were unlucky not to get a point from that game. Portugal will need to more fluent going forward. So far, the genius and determination of Ronaldo has got them through their matches, but others need to start contributing. Portugal should still win this, even a draw is enough for them to progress. I’ll go with a narrow Portugal win, although I can see Iran have some chances of their own.
Prediction: Iran 0 – 1 Portugal

Match 6: Spain vs Morocco
Image result for spain vs morocco

The unlikely scenario of Spain not progressing to the next round is also still a possibility! It can happen if the other fixture is a draw or a narrow win for Iran, and a higher margin loss for Spain in this game. In all honesty, I can’t see that happening. Morocco are already out and have nothing to play for in this game. Spain will want no slip-ups after what happened in the last World Cup and will make sure they get the job done early. I predict an easy win for Spain and hardly any possession for Morocco in this match.

Prediction: Spain 3 – 0 Morocco

Match 3: South Korea vs Mexico
Mexico started off where they left off against Germany, taking control of the game in the early exchanges. They were rewarded, albeit with a fortunate penalty decision in the 24th minute. The South Korean goalkeeper did his best at mind-games before the kick was taken, but it proved ineffective as Vela converted. The rest of the first half was mostly uneventful, with South Korea unable to come close to a leveller. Cho pulled off a spectacular save on the hour mark from Guardado’s long range effort. Mexico’s constant pressure was rewarded a few minutes later after another trademark counter-attack resulting in Lozano finding Hernandez free to his left, and the striker made no mistake in dodging a sliding tackle and finding the net. This was the Mexican striker’s 50th international goal, and he extends his lead as his country’s top scorer. The game fizzled out with Mexico keeping control. In injury tiem, South Korea’s only real impact player, Son Heung-Min curled in a scorching effort, to which Ochoa had no response. It was only a consolation as Mexico almost confirmed their progress into the next round.
Final Score: South Korea 1 – 2 Mexico

Match 4: Germany vs Sweden
Image result for kroos goal vs sweden

Germany started off like a team possessed, bombarding the Swedish goal in the opening minutes with a flurry of attacks and attempts. The passes count at the end of 10 minutes read 122:6 in favour of Germany. However, familiar defensive frailties came to the fore when Marcus Berg ran onto a through ball between the two centre-backs, with Hummels not playing because of injury, and it only took a tug on his shirt from the chasing Boateng for the Swedish forward to scuff his effort and finding Neuer at the end of it. That could very well have been deemed a foul and Boateng could’ve been sent off for being the last man. The Germans got lucky in this case. Their luck didn’t last very long though. Toivonen received a chipped pass from Claesson from the left wing, got his shot off which deflected off Rudiger and lobbed over a helpless Neuer. The defending champions were rocking and it seemed like the curse was about to strike again. Gundogan, who was a replacement for the injured Rudy, took a shot a few minutes later took a wicked deflection but the Swedish goalkeeper recovered to stop it. Muller did not get a good connection on the rebound under pressure. The ball squirmed under the goalkeeper, who was still on the floor, and rolled just wide of the goal. Sweden had another chance at the end of the half this time it was close to Neuer and he palmed it away. Germany came out of the blocks all guns firing once again and levelled in the 48th minute. Werner drove down the line on the left wing, fired a grounded cross which Reus got on the need of and scored. Germany kept control of the game for much of the second half but just couldn’t find the breakthrough. Their worries were compounded when Jerome Boateng was awarded a second yellow card inside the final 10 minutes. This was now looking taller than Everest! The Swedes failed to capitalize however, sitting back and letting 10 man Germany have the ball as they willed. Julian Brandt hit the post in injury time, in a throwback to his effort against Mexico, and the result was the same, the ball cannoning off the bar and Werner being offside for the rebound. Germany were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area on the left side after a silly foul. Kroos stood behind it, passed it to Reus who held it up, for Kroos to follow up with a shot and it was unstoppable. The ball curled past the advancing wall and Olsen had no chance. The Germans had come back from the brink, and the group is wide open again.
Final Score: Germany 2 – 1 Sweden

Match 3: Japan vs Senegal

Image result for japan senegal world cup
Both teams have won their opening fixture, with Japan taking advantage of their numerical advantage for most of the game, and pulling off an upset over Colombia. Senegal were the better team throughout against a wasteful Poland and took all three points. Whoever wins this game will put one foot into the Knockout rounds. Senegal should have too much quality in this match, with Japan really on a couple of players to make things happen for them. I can see the Senegalese break down their opponents with their overall game and predict a win for them.
Prediction: Japan 0 – 2 Senegal

Match 4: Poland vs Colombia
Image result for poland colombia world cup

Both teams will be looking to get their campaigns back on track and a defeat would mean near elimination. Colombia looked good in patches in their opening game, doing well to draw level even after going down to 10 men, but couldn’t hold on for a point. They will hope for James Rodriguez to be fit to start this game, as he can really be the difference-maker. Poland will be hoping to be more clinical in front of goal. The Poles look a better outfit on paper, with a lot of top level experience for their players. I predict Poland to just shade and do believe there will be goals in this game.
Prediction: Poland 2 – 1 Colombia

Match 3: Argentina vs Croatia
Image result for croatia goal vs argentina

Croatia started off brightly, with Perisic forcing a smart low save from Caballero in the 5th minute. Argentina had a couple of glorious within the first half hour though. Aguero goal-bound shot was blocked by Lovren in the 13th minute. Just at the half hour mark, Subasic was woefully out of position as the ball fell to Enzo Perez after Lovren blocked the cross across the goal. The Argentina midfielder could only find the side netting with an open goal in front of him. A couple of minutes later, Mandzukic headed wide at the far post, with no defender close to him. Only getting it on target would surely have been a goal because of his proximity to Caballero. The second started off slow. A seemingly innocuous back-pass to Caballero saw the goalkeeper present a gift to the Croatians as his sliced shot was volleyed in superbly by Rebic. The winger was perhaps lucky to still be on the pitch after a high tackle in the first half, but his finish could only be admired. Argentina made Subasic work ten minutes later, but somehow the goalkeeper and defenders combined to scramble the ball out for a corner. In the 80th minute, Modric received a pass from Brozovic, and from around 25 yards out, launched an unstoppable waist-high drive that nestle into the corner of the net. Nothing Caballero could do about that, it was a stroke of genius from one the best midfielders in the world. Rakitic hit the bar from a free-kick five minutes later. By now, the Argentines were down and out. Croatia walked to a third goal in injury time, Rakitic finding the goal this time, as the Argentine defenders stopped and kept asking for off-side instead of trying to get a tackle in. That’s how it ended. Croatia put in the most assured performance of the World Cup so, not allowing their opponents to settle at all in the second half and coming away with a deserved victory. They were helped by the opposition tactics no doubt, one wonders why players like Banega, Dybala, Di Maria, Higuain, Lo Celso and Pavon were kept on the bench for the majority of the match.
Final Score: Argentina 0 – 3 Croatia

Match 4: Nigeria vs Iceland
Image result for musa goal vs iceland

A match that had huge implications for the future of the group and for the Argentinians. Iceland were favourites to get a result after their display against Argentina. Nigeria looked a bit out of sorts against Croatia and needed an improvement to get something out of this one. The first half was uneventful, with Iceland’s couple of chances in the opening minutes the highlight of the half. Nigeria came out flying in the second half and put the pressure on their opponents. The first goal was a thing of beauty as Ahmed Musa plucked a Victor Moses out of thin air while off the ground and rifled in the half volley. He hit the bar with a curling effort in the 74th minute with the goalkeeper beaten. Musa grabbed a deserved second goal just a minute later, picking up the ball on the left wing, getting past one defender, rounding the goalkeeper and leaving the two defenders on the line to score. Iceland did not know what had just hit and looked uncharacteristically out of their depth on this stage. Iceland were awarded a penalty with five minutes to go, again after consultation with VAR. Sigurdsson stepped and put his effort over the bar! That’s how it ended and the fight for second place in this group is wide open now, giving a lifeline to Argentina in the process.
Final Score: Nigeria 2 – 0 Iceland

Match 3: Brazil vs Costa Rica
Related image

Brazil were not at their fluent best in their first game and would be looking to avoid an Argentina like situation in this game. Costa Rica would surely set up to frustrate the South Americans, and look to steal a point and keep themselves in the competition. However, it was the Costa Ricans who looked the more incisive in the first half with some attempts on goal. Brazil’s two best chances of the half fell to Marcelo, with both shots coming from outside the box. Gabriel Jesus did put the ball in the net but it was ruled out correctly for offside. Jesus hit the bar in the opening minutes of the second half with a header. The follow up shot came from Coutinho from the edge of the box, but it was straight at Navas who kicked it away. The Brazilian onslaught continued but a combination of bad finishes and Keylor Navas’s brilliance kept them at bay. For the first time in this World Cup, VAR was used to rule out a penalty awarded to Brazil, with the cameras picking up that no contact was made as Neymar went to ground. Finally, in the 91st minute, Costa Rica’s defence was penetrated as Coutinho ran onto a Firmino header diverted by Jesus and scored his second goal in as many games. Neymar showboated from a corner in the final minute of injury time, before finishing off the next attack with a goal, and Brazil’s second. There would be no slip from this South American team as the now took control of the group. This meant that Costa Rica were now eliminated irres
Final Score: Brazil 2 – 0 Costa Rica

Match 4: Serbia vs Switzerland
Image result for xhaka goal vs serbia

Serbia started off the better team, with two chances for Mitrovic inside the first five minutes. The first header was saved by Sommer but the Swiss goalkeeper had no response for the second. It took half an hour for Switzerland to have their first opening but Stojkovic parried wide Dzemaili’s close range. Serbia nearly got the second, as a corner late in the first half found it’s through the crowd to a Matic at the far post, but he couldn’t react in time to convert. Switzerland’s change in approach in the second half was visible. In the 52nd minute, Shaqiri’s blocked shot became a loose ball just outside the Serbian penalty area, which Granit Xhaka ran onto a launched an unstoppable shot into the far corner. This was one the goals of the tournament so far, from the much maligned midfielder. Shaqiri hit the post from an unlikely angle on the left wing a few minutes later. Switzerland were fully in control now. Their increased influence were awarded right at the end, as Shaqiri ran onto and through ball from Gavronovic and scored to give Switzerland the win. This was the perfect example of a match of two halves. Serbia felt hard-done by the result, especially after replays clearly showed Mitrovic being wrestled by two defenders earlier on in the game. VAR was not used on this occasion, and a certain penalty was not awarded. The Swiss now are front-runners for qualifying from this group, with Costa Rica as their last game, with the latter already eliminated.
Final Score: Serbia 1 – 2 Switzerland

Match 3: Belgium vs Tunisia
Image result for belgium tunisia

Belgium ran out comfortable winner against minnows Panama in their first match and should not be too troubled by Tunisia in this one. The latter were undone by a late England winner in their first game. You can be sure that the North Africans will set up in the same way in this match. However, the Belgians should have enough to get the better of this game. There is a chance of this turning into an exercise of attack versus defence and that is why I’m predicting a narrow win for the Europeans, without being too troubled though.
Prediction: Belgium 1 – 0 Tunisia

Match 4: England vs Panama
Image result for england panama

England should’ve too much quality in this game as Panama just don’t look prepared for this level of competition. The English have taken the pressure off themselves with the late win against Tunisia. They are expected to line-up with a different team for this one, as there was a couple of knocks in the last game. There has been controversy in the build-up with the English team being leaked by their own press yesterday. Seriously, you can’t make these things up!
Prediction: England 2 – 0 Panama
