European Championships - Day 13

Just a couple of groups left and the second round ties are starting to take shape. Two third placed teams are already through. The bottom half of the draw looks like a minefield already. It can get worse depending on the results of Group F!

In this post, I’ll cover the matches played in Groups B, C and D and look ahead to the last two remaining Groups; E and F.

Match Reviews

Group B

Russia vs Wales

Spain’s performance against Turkey had received rave reviews. If anything, Wales’s performance in this match, matched or even surpassed the Spanish. They were imperial in their attacking and use of the ball. The triumvirate of Bale, Ramsey and Allen wreaked havoc against the Russian defense. Russia, still in with a chance of qualification, tried to create chances of their own. But their forward advances left enough space at the back for the Welsh to exploit. While Joe Allen kept possession and controlled the midfield, Ramsey played the attacking midfielder role to perfection, finding Bale on numerous occasions. Bale, on his part, played the channels and found lots of space in behind the Russian defense. He left Russian defenders for dead as early as the half an hour mark. The Welsh breakthrough came relatively early, as Allen played in Ramsey with a precision through ball. Ramsey placed in past the keeper. The second goal came about after Bales through ball took a deflection from a Russian defender and fell kindly to Neil Taylor. The defender isn’t the likeliest to find himself in the penalty box, but he took his chance expertly. On the side, Neil Taylor’s mother is a Bengali and my parochial pride is aroused! I’ll follow his career closely now.

The second half no different as Wales looked to put the result beyond Russia’s reach. The Russian goalkeeper, Akinfaeev made a total of 8 saves. Otherwise, the result could have been humiliating. He was powerless to stop Bale, who found himself one-on-one with the goalie half-way through the second half. He scored taking his tournament tally to 3 goals, the joint top scorer. While other superstars were faltering, Bale were rising to the challenge. The match ended 3-0 to Wales, capping off the most complete team performance of the Euros so far.

My Prediction: Russia 0-1 Wales

Slovakia vs England

Both teams would be assured of an automatic qualification place with a win. Lose, and they faced the prospect of finishing 3^rd in the group and a potential clash with Germany. A lot was on the line. England came out firing, keeping more of the ball and creating better chances. They failed to score, however, as dogged Slovak defending smart saves kept them out. The Liverpool duo of Lallana and Clyne were the creative sparks. Sturridge was off-colour in his wide role, another questionable tactic by Hodgson. Slovakia never looked like breaking through. It was apparent that they had come here to take a point. The English grew more and more frustrated as the game went on.

In the second half, Nathaniel Clyne’s honesty probably robbed England of a penalty. He was tripped as he broke into the box, but he opted to stay on his feet, and his shot was saved. Had he gone down, the referee might have given a spot-kick. Martin Skrtel was a rock in the Slovak defense, intercepting crosses and making numerous blocks. The English substitutions failed to make a similar impact as in their previous games against Wales. Once again, England had failed to break down a defense despite dominating. Their fans were left frustrated as they finished 2^nd in the group behind Wales. A possible outing against Portugal could materialize in the second, depending on results.

My Prediction: Slovakia 1-2 England

Group C

Ukraine vs Poland

Poland needed a big win to overturn the Goal Difference deficit they had to Germany. They did not have much of the ball in the first half. Ukraine kept possession but only managed two attempts on target. They were quite wasteful in the final third. Poland, though, managed just one. They would have to pick up their game in the second half, if they were serious about getting top spot in the group. They did exactly that early on in the second half. Jakub Blaszczykowski drove a shot from inside the penalty box to give Poland the lead. The Poles had more of the ball following the goal but could not extend their lead. Ukraine had a couple chances late on, but a lack of attacking quality let them down. Poland were moving on in the tournament while Ukraine were going back home.

My Prediction: Ukraine 1-1 Poland

Final Score: Ukraine 1-1 Poland

Northern Ireland vs Germany

Incredibly, the Northern Irish could finish above Germany with a win here. The Germans were hoping to prevent any upsets. They started with real desire and created chance after chance. Three clear cut opportunities were squandered, with mishits and saves foiling them. Finally, after 32 minutes and about 5 attempts on goal, Thomas Mueller, with his back to goal, set up Mario Gomez who scored via a small deflection. There was a sense of relief as the Germans were finally ahead. They looked likely to extend their lead too with more opportunities in the first half that went astray. Mesut Ozil must have been wondering why the forwards on his team cannot score from his incisive passes!

The second half followed the same pattern with the Germans on the attack for most of it and Northern Ireland defending doggedly. 1-0 was a precarious score-line for the world champions. Nortehrn Ireland came into the match a bit more in the latter part of second half. But they could not mount a serious challenge to the German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. This match was a story of missed opportunities for the Germans, but Poland’s narrow win meant the Germans retained 1^st position in the group.

Group D

Czech Republic vs Turkey

This was a game of contrasts. Czech Republic played, Turkey won. Czech Republic created chances, Turkey scored goals. Czech Republic dominated possession, Turkey dominated the headlines.

The game began with the Czechs creating a couple of chances. They were undone by poor finishing and good goalkeeping. 10 minutes in, and with literally their first attack, Turkey broke down the left flank. Emre Mor was allowed to run with the ball after getting to a through pass. He squared the ball to the center of the area, from where Yilmaz finished smartly to continue his goal-scoring form from before the tournament. The Czechs continued creating the better chances but without reward. Turkey extended their lead in the middle of the second half when Mehmet Topal, starting in a marginally offside position, set up Ozan Tufan who drilled a fierce shot past Petr Cech. The Czech goalkeeper had no chance. What should’ve been a moment to savour for the Turkish soon turned farcical as flares were thrown on to the pitch once again. However, unlike the Croatia match, where similar events took place, the Czechs could not produc a turnaround here. Sivok hit the post with a header and a couple more chances were missed as the Czechs crashed out. Turkey were still in with a shot to qualify for the second round, but would have to wait for results elsewhere.

Croatia vs Spain

Spain would’ve been confident of ensuring top spot in the group after their assured performance against Turkey. They were up against a Croatia side without their injured captain Luka Modric. Spain started on the front foot, creating chances. Their goal came soon enough. David Silva found Fabregas with a sublime reverse pass from the edge of the area. Fabregas squared the ball, out of reach of the on-rushing Croatian goalkeeper Subasic, for Morata to tap into an empty net. The signs were ominous for the Croats. Despite going behind, they did not lose hope. Croatia started getting more of the ball. David de Gea almost gifted them an equalizer when he allowed himself to be robbed off the ball, only for Rakitic’s chip to hit both the bar and the post before staying out. Croatia’s effort soon bore fruit. Ivan Perisic, so often the finisher, turned provider, putting in a low cross into the six yard area. Kalinic scored with a subtle finish with the outside of his right foot giving de Gea having no chance.

Early in the second half, De Gea almost made a mess of another cross, as Croatia failed to take advantage of the follow up. Spain were awarded a soft penalty as David Silva fell over after in the area following minimal contact. Amazingly, it was Sergio Ramos who stepped up to take the spot-kick. He hit it straight down the middle making it simple for Subasic to save. The Croatian goalkeeper was a good two yards off his line when the kick was taken. The officials should’ve called for a retake but given the nature of the awarding of the penalty, this was justice served. At the death, Croatia countered they had broken down a Spanish attack in their penalty box. Ivan Perisic found space in the box and shot past de Gea. Despite the ball having taken a slight deflection off the defender, the Spanish goalkeeper should’ve saved at his near post. Croatia held on, taking first place in the group. Spain were looking at the unsavoury future of a second round tie against Italy! This result, coupled with England’s failure to take first place in tehri group, meant that all big names were now in the bottom half of the draw!

My Prediction: Croatia 0-1 Spain

Match Previews

Group E

Italy vs Republic of Ireland

Italy have been super strong tactically and defensively. They deserved their late win against Sweden in their last game. They are overwhelming favourites to roll over an underwhelming Ireland team. Despite Roy Keane’s advice to kick the Italians, Ireland must remember that the Italians themselves are not shy to play dirty when required. It would be foolish decision to try to beat the Italians at their own game. Italy should be too strong and they’re in with a shot to be the only team to go through the group stages with 3 wins. That was not something a lot of people would’ve predicted before this tournament got started.

My Prediction: Italy 2-0 Republic of Ireland

Sweden vs Belgium

At the start of the tournament, by prediction for this match was a lone goal win for Sweden. Given how they’ve performed, I’ve changed my prediction to favour Belgium. And yet, there is this niggling feeling that this possibly being Zlatan’s last international match, we could yet be in store for something special from the man himself. On form, Belgium should edge this. They were clinical against Ireland, a team Sweden failed to beat, and were mostly the second best in most departments on that day. I wouldn’t be surprised with a surprise result in this match though.

My Prediction: Sweden 1-2 Belgium

Group F

Iceland vs Austria

Coming in as underdogs, and expected to perform well might have had a negative influence on Austria. So far, they’ve not produced any kind of form which saw them qualify for this tournament. With 1 point only so far, only a win would suffice to keep them in the tournament. Iceland, on the other hand have had a great tournament so far. After the historic draw against Portugal, they were unlucky to not have taken any points from the Hungary game. They would be the team with a better atmosphere at the moment. I do expect Austria to play better in this match than they already have. But Iceland have shown that they have the spunk required to compete against stronger teams. I’m going with a scoring draw in this one, with Austria’s lack of attacking options and flair likely to mean they waste a lot of chances in this game. This would also mean Austria crashing out.

My Prediction: Iceland 1-1 Austria

Hungary vs Portugal

If you’d told the Hungarians a couple weeks back, that they would be the ones already in the second round at this stage, while their opponents needed at least a point from this game to stay alive, they’d have laughed at you. As it stands, the Magyars have played fearless football and confirmed their progress already. Portugal are in dire straits and face elimination even with a draw. They should approach this game with the sole objective of winning. They do have the quality to beat this Hungary team, but just barely. I think the real Portugal will turn up today and clinch the win and progress to the second round. Whether Ronaldo plays a central role in that process, I’m not very certain.

My Prediction: Hungary 1-2 Portugal

The favourites seem to want to eliminate their rivals early on and are conspiring to face each other in the second round itself. Qualifications for Northern Ireland and Hungary are the feel good stories of the first round so far. Add to this the travails of England and Spain against the more spirited Wales and Croatia, respectively, and we have an interesting final two weeks shaping up.

European Championships - Day 11

The European Championships seem to be having as much action off the pitch as on it. More teams are being charged with fan misconduct. French police are failing to keep a lid on the situation. A shame really, because the action on the field is mostly quite intriguing.

In this post, I recap the remaining match from group e as well as matches from Groups F and A. I’ll also look ahead to matches from Groups B, C and D.

Group E

Belgium vs Republic of Ireland

Belgian coach Marc Wilmots had singled out two players, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, saying he was expecting big things from them in this match. A strange decision as such an announcement is likely to put increased pressure on individual players. However, whatever he must’ve told them behind the scenes worked wonders on the field. Lukaku, having struggled against Italy was a changed player. De Bruyne, Belgium’s best player against Italy, was influential again in this match.

Belgium dominated the play in the first half. They had many chances to score and even had the ball in the net from Carrasco, but it was deemed offside. Ireland were reduced to a couple of efforts from distance and a few mishits. It was a wonder that the score was still goalless at half-time. In the second half, Belgium got early reward. De Bruyne found Lukaku who finished with composure being 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper. Ireland had a spell of possession after the goal but it was undone by Belgium’s second. Axel Witsel scored with a powerful header after meeting Thomas Meunier’s cross, after a double digit number of passes in the build-up. Lukaku then put the game to bed, once again capitalizing after good play from de Bruyne down the right flank. The Belgians held off the wayward Irish till the whistle to get themselves back into contention.

My Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Final Score: Belgium 3-0 Republic of Ireland

Group F

Iceland vs Hungary

The Hungarians came into game wanting to secure qualification to the second round. Iceland too were looking to build on the unlikely draw versus Portugal. Both teams tried to attack. Iceland had a glorious opportunity early on but 40 year old Gabor Kiraly made a smart save with his leg. Hungary replied with a narrowly wide shot of their own. A clumsy scrap in the Hungarian penalty box led to Iceland being awarded a penalty kick. Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the spot and Iceland took a one goal lead into half-time.

Iceland started the second half better. There wasn’t a lot of action to report in this half. Hungary were getting more into the game as the half progressed. Their efforts were finally rewarded as Birkir Sævarsson scoredinto his own net, trying to clear a good low cross. Another late goal had decided the result in this tournament.

My Prediction: Iceland 1-1 Hungary

Portugal vs Austria

Having dropped two points unexpectedly against Iceland, Portugal were looking to get back to winning ways. A win was of even more importance for their opponents. Austria were favourites going into their game against Hungary but came out second best.

Portugal dominated this game, much like their previous outing. But once again, they could not find a way to score. The Austrians defended doggedly and had a few openings of their own but this game was more a question of whether Portugal could get their deserved goal. Austria once again failed to get their best players into the match but Arnautovic put in an improved performance. He was seen tracking back, winning the ball in his own half and holding on to it better in attack. Alaba was brought off without making an impact. With less than 15 minutes to go, Portugal earned themselves a penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and you could the sense of anticipation among the fans of his conversion. He ended up dragging the kick too far left, the ball crashing off the post and then cleared by an Austrian defender. Ronaldo’s luck was still eluding him. Ronaldo put the ball into the net a few minutes later, only to be pulled up for offside! The drama surrounding the best player in Europe had just piqued. Austrai held on for a draw, ensuring that the group would be decided in the third set of matches.

My Prediction: Portugal 2-1 Austria

Group A

Switzerland vs France

The hosts had already qualified and were looking to ensure first position in the group. Olivier Giroud was rested up front with Gignac replacing him. Yohan Cabaye came in for N’Golo Kante whle Moussa Sissoko started ahead of the rested Dmitri Payet. France played fluent attacking football, probably the best they’d done this tournament. Pogba was the best player in the first half and was unlucky not to have scored on three separate occasions. He hit the post on two of those occasions. The second half also played out in the same fashion with Switzerland not posing much of a threat on the French goal. Substitute Payet crashed a sweetly struck shot against the bar, after beating the goalkeeper. That would be the last genuine chance for either team, as a draw saw both teams qualify for the second round.

My Prediction: Switzerland 0-1 France

Final Score: Switzerland 0-0 France

Romania vs Albania

Romania started the match with more possession and a few chances. The Albanians started getting intot he match and soon created a couple of clear-cut opportunities. The second of these opportunities should have been converted as Lenjani skied over from six yards with the keeper scrambling to protect his open net. On 43 minutes, Armando Sadiku found himself in space at the back post, heading a looping header over the charging keeper and a defender. He’d just sored his country’s first ever goal at a major tournament. The team celebrated in a manner worthy of the occasion.

Albania had chances to increase their lead and put the result beyond contention in the second half. They failed to take their chances but were not punished for it. Romania failed to capitalize on their own chance. The 1-0 reverse meant the Romanians were going home, despite such positive displays against France and Switzerland. They’d been upstaged by the minnow Albania, who are still in with an outside shot of qualifying for the second round.

My Prediction: Romania 1-1 Albania

Match Previews

Group B

Russia vs Wales

The Welsh should be favourites to claim a win and progress safely into the next round. They were unlucky as England snatched three points in injury time in their last outing. However, stranger things have happened and Russia will be looking to get an unexpected win here, something they’ve often done before in major tournaments. This group is still wide open, and on the night, if they are not careful, Wales can see their dream turn into a nightmare at very short notice. Having said that, I still feel Wales will have enough to see of an average Russian team.

My Prediction: Russia 0-1 Wales

Slovakia vs England

With Roy Hodgson rumoured to be making six changes to his England squad, including resting Rooney and starting Vardy and Sturridge up front, and changing both full backs, it will be interesting to see how the much changed team will gel at such short notice. The Slovakians will be looking to build on their impressive victory over Russia. England need to be careful and keep an eye on Hamsik. He looked back to his best in the last game after an indifferent outing against Wales. Expecting England to just scrape thorough.

My Prediction: Slovakia 1-2 England

Group C

Ukraine vs Poland

The co-hosts of the last edition of the European Championships go head-to-head in the last group game in group C. Poland were unlucky not to grab a win against Germany, having arguably had the better chances. Ukraine’s slumped to a 0-2 loss to Nortehrn Ireland after a bright start against Germany. With Ukraine virtually eliminated, Poland will be looking to get their game flowing again. Poland should have too much for their neighbours, although I don’t expect too many goals here. Maybe a Lewandowski goal is due now.

My Prediction: Ukraine 0-1 Poland

Northern Ireland vs Germany

Germany will be hoping their big guns up front can start firing soon. Thomas Mueller has been uncharacteristically quiet so far while Mario Gotze has looked off the pace. This just might be the right kind of game to kickstart the duo’s tournament. Nortehrn Ireland recovered well from their defeat against Poland to win comfortably against a poor Ukraine team. Having lost just once in their last 14 games, they’ll be looking create a massive upset against the World Champions. The Germans should have too much firepower though.

My Prediction: Northern Ireland 0-2 Germany

Group D

Czech Republic vs Turkey

With about 20 minutes to go in their match against Croatia, the Czechs looked like they were heading for the exit. An unlikely turnaround now puts them well in contention for qualification to the next round, although the same via a third place finish looks more likely. Turkey perhaps put in the worst defensive performance of the finals so far, in their 0-3 hammering by Spain. The squad will be down on confidence, but you can never count the Turks out in these situations. Their recovery in the qualifiers for this tournament is ample evidence. I get the feeling that both teams will cancel each other out.

My Prediction: Czech Republic 1-1 Turkey

Croatia vs Spain

Croatia might yet live to rue the action of their fans in their last game. Seemingly cruising against the Czechs, they first let them into the game and then their fans made them lose concentration, resulting in them giving away a cheap penalty, from which Czech Republic equalized. Spain are coming off the back of the most accomplished performance of the Euros so far. Morata and Nolito look to have a good understanding and Iniesta is still the force as he was in previous tournaments. The Spanish look favourites and I’m going with a narrow victory for them too. Modric is a doubt for Craotia, and his absence would be a big blow.

My Prediction: Croatia 0-1 Spain

We are nearing the end of the group stage and teams are now booking their respective places in the second round. It will be an anxious wait for all 3^rd place finishers for the other groups to finish playing. I’ll be back to wrap up all such happening in a couple of days. Till then, enjoy the football.

European Championships - Day 9

The second set of matches are drawing to a close. Most teams have had two games playing together and are providing a better indication of their true form. Late goals seem to have become a norm at these championships, with several more going in the past couple days.

In this post I recap the action from groups C and D and one match from Group E (I won’t be able to post tonight, so will cover the other, previously previewed, group E match in the next post). I will also provide my thoughts on the upcoming games of groups F and A.

Match Reviews

Group C

Ukraine vs Northern Ireland - No luck required for the Northern Irish

Both teams were coming off the back of defeats, albeit against more fancied opponents. This match was expected to be a close fought affair as both had played well in defeat. The Norther Irish started the game the livelier team. They were chasing down everything and putting their opponents under pressure. Ukraine tried to foothold in the game, carving out some openings, but were a step behind for the most of the game. The Northern Irish were rewarded early in the second half as Gareth McAuley took his chance. Their lead was a deserved one. The rest of the  second half played out in much the same fashion as the first. Right at the end, Northern Ireland scored again in the dying seconds to put a gloss on their victory. A truly historic win for them as Ukraine are now facing almost certain elimination.

My Prediction: Ukraine 0-1 Northern Ireland

Germany vs Poland - A lot of shadow boxing, but no winner

The World Champions were looking to cement their place in the next round with a win here. The Poles were looking to get one over on their traditional rivals. The match lacked quality finishing. Midfielders of both teams created several chances. The forwards were having a bad day as shot after shot was being mis-queued or missed completely. Poland had the better chances to score, as match-winner from their first game, Milik, spurned two great opportunities. The Germans looked a bit harried in defense despite the return of Mats Hummels. The best German player on the pitch was Ozil, and he seemed to be gliding away from opposition defenders. His hard work went to vain though as Germany failed to get telling touches inside the Polish penalty area. The game ended in a goalless draw, with Poland the likelier to feel aggrieved with the result.

My Prediction: Germany 2-1 Poland

Group D

Czech Republic vs Croatia - The fans steal the limelight in what was an exciting game

The Croats continued from where they left against Turkey. They controlled the game superbly and did not let Czech Republic settle down. The Czechs, much like their outing against Spain failed to find answers to a superior opponent. Croatia’s efforts bore fruit as Perisic headed home in the later part of the first half. As half-time approached, there seemed to be only one winner in this game.

For the first part of the second half, it was status quo. Croatia piled on more pressure and were rewarded again as Rakitic finished after a sweet touch. The Croats were cruising. Against the run of play, Milan Skoda gave the Czechs some hope, scoring in the 76^th minute. They started getting into the game as Croatia went into defensive mode. The game was then brought to a halt for 10 minutes as flares were thrown on to the field. There was a very scary moment as an explosive burst in the hands of one of the field-side officials clearing the debris. Ironically, it was the Croatian fans that were responsible for the menace.

The game got under way and almost immediately Czech Republic won a penalty because of a handball in the area. Thomas Necid made no mistake with the spot-kick. The match had turned on its head, which seemed impossible half an hour before. In injury time, the Czechs were the ones looking for the win. No more goals went in, and one has to wonder if it was the Croatia fans themselves that cost their team the victory.

My Prediction: Czech Republic 1-2 Croatia

Spain vs Turkey - Spain look to be back to their best

Spain came into this game buoyed by their victory over the Czechs, although it wasn’t the most convincing performance. One would expect them to keep hold of possession for large parts of the game, and that’s exactly what happened. Turkey were run ragged for 90 minutes, and did not seem like pulling off anything in attack. Their defense was creaking and Spain took advantage. Morata got on the end of a Nolito cross first up and put Spain ahead. A couple of minute later, provider turned scorer as Nolito got on the end of a horrible Turkish clearance and steered past the goalkeeper. The result seemed settled by now and it was only a question of the score-line. The second half wasn’t much better for Turkey. Spain added another goal through Morata, the forward shaking off criticism from the previous game to star here. This was the most dominating display of the finals so far, and ensured Spain's progress.

My Prediction: Spain 1-0 Turkey

Group E

Italy vs Sweden - Italy doing it the Italian way

Having outmaneuvered Belgium in their opening encounter, Italy were now being considered a threat for the championship. Sweden were coming off the back of a disappointing draw against Ireland.  The match itself wasn’t a very lively spectacle, but the Italians were attacking a little more than they usually do. They were the better team on the pitch but the breakthrough wasn’t forthcoming. Mid-way through the second half, the Italians were left with their hearts in their mouths as Ibrahimovic missed from a yard out, skying his shot over the post. It wouldn’t have counted, he was flagged for offside, but it was a shocking miss! The Italians could advantage as Eder scored a superb strike in the 88^th minute. The Italians had ground out another positive result, and were looking like they could go deep into another tournament.

My Prediction: Italy 2-1 Sweden

Match Previews

Group F

Iceland vs Hungary

Two underdogs go head to head. Expect this to be an attacking affair. Both teams gave a very good account of themselves in their respective opening fixtures. Hungary would be on Cloud 9 after turning the tables on their neighbours, the more fancied Austria. They’ll be looking for a win which would secure their passage to the next round. Not many would’ve predicted that happening so early in the tournament. Iceland would want to go one better than their result against Portugal. Having done so well to get a point from that game, they’ll be extra motivated not to mess things up in this one. I think the two teams will cancel each other out and split the points.

My Prediction: Iceland 1-1 Hungary

Portugal vs Austria

Austria have to put up an improved performance if they are to get anything from this game. A loss here would mean virtual elimination. They seem to be having a hard time living up to the dark-horses tag. Portugal aren’t breathing easy either. They played well for most of the game, but the spirit of the Iceland team took away one point. Portugal played well last game and if they can repeat the same performance, I think they’ll come out on top in this one. The world once again awaits Cristiano Ronaldo to put in a good performance on the international stage. Whether that happens or not, only time will tell.

My Prediction: Portugal 2-1 Austria

Group A

Romania vs Albania

The minnows Albania in their first ever major tournament have given a very good account of themselves. It was a cruel blow for them as France scored two late goals to grab a win in their previous outing. Despite their good showing, Albania are looking at an early exit from the tournament. Even if that likely outcome happens, they can go back with their heads held high. Romania would still be looking to qualify for the next round. The draw against Switzerland have given them a lifeline. However, I don’t think they’ll be able to take all three points from this one. Albania will be looking to make a lasting impression and they might just sneak a goal, putting Romania out of the tournament.

My Prediction: Romania 1-1 Albania

Switzerland vs France

Having already qualified, the French will be relaxed ahead of their game against the Swiss. This match will give Didier Deschamps a chance to rotate his squad. The Swiss, although almost assured of a place in the next round have a chance to top the group with a win here. That looks an unlikely result as the hosts seem to be on a roll. They’ve pulled out two late wins and will look to play entertaining football for the home fans. A narrow win for France looks likely, and another late winner is not out of the question.

My Prediction: Switzerland 0-1 France

The group stages are reaching their climax. Three teams, the hosts France, Italy and Spain, have booked their place in the next round. The next few days should give us a clearer picture of how the second round draw will look like. I’ll be back in a couple of days to review all the action. Till then, let’s hope only the headlines are the ones from on the pitch.

European Championships - Day 7

The past couple of days have seen the first upsets of the tournament so far. This edition of the European Championship is shaping up to be one of most open ever. With the good, comes the bad as off-field antics of a number of the supporter groups are putting their countries to shame.

In this post, I review matches of Group F, A and B and look forward to a few key clashes coming up in Groups C, D and E

Group F

Austria vs Hungary – The Magyars turn on the Magic

Austria, considered one of the dark horses for the tournament, started the match better. Alaba hit the post in the first minute itself, and they dominated the play for the first 20 minutes. After that, the first half became a scrappy affair with neither team able to keep the ball for long spells. The second began in much the same fashion. Austria were unable to get their key men into the game, with Alaba failing to get on the ball enough and Arnautovic looking a frustrated figure up front. Hungary took the lead against the run of play after a clever interchange between their forwards. Adam Szalai slid in to finish past the rushing Austrian goalkeeper, giving his team a surprise lead. The Austrians tried their best to get back into the game but a mixture of stout defending and poor attacking foiled them. Late in the game, as Austria pushed more and more players forward, Hungary broke with pace. Zoltan Stieber got on the end of a good through pass from Priskin and deftly chipped past the goalkeeper, securing victory.

My Prediction: Austria 2-0 Hungary

Final Score: Austria 0-2 Hungary

Portugal vs Iceland – A night to remember for Iceland

Iceland are a nation of 330000 people! They were ranked in the 130s just four years ago. Their meteoric rise has seen them jump a 100 places and secure an unlikely qualification into their first major tournament. Portugal were riding on the crest of a good results in the friendlies leading up to the Euros. Their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo would be making his much anticipated entry into the tournament.

Portugal dominated much of the first half and should’ve been ahead on a few occasions before they eventually were, Nani smartly slotting past the Icelandic goalkeeper in the first half. They had chances to extend their lead too but failed to capitalize. The Portuguese were the aggressors in the second half too. However, they were pegged back to level after Birkir Bjarnason  made history, scoring Iceland’s first ever goal in a major tournament. Defender Vierinha was at fault, leaving Bjarnason free to volley home from a good cross. Try as they might, Icleand somehow managed to keep Portugal at bay. There were a few dicey moments as goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson looked nervous. However, he always seemed to be getting the ball away from danger and Iceland rode their resilience to hang on for the draw.

Having come up short in the match, Ronaldo let himself down with some unnecessary words about Icleand’s performance and celebrations at the end of the match.

My Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Iceland

Group A

Romania vs Switzerland – Romania still in with a shot to qualify for the latter stages

Romania gave another good account of themselves against the more fancied Swiss. They took the game to their opponents in the first half and were rewarded with a penalty when Stephan Lichtsteiner pulled Alexandru Chipciu's shirt in the area. Bogdan Stancu stepped up to convert his second penalty of the finals. Both teams came close once more in the first half to adding to the lead. Fabian Scharr almost scored with a spectacular drive, only to have the ball tipped over. Cristian Sapunaru then poked a shot on to the outside of the post.

The Swiss equalized early in the second half via a cracking volley from Admir Mehmedi, following a corner. The rest of the second half wasn’t very attractive but both teams did create a couple for opportunities. Xherdan Shaqiri went for a spectacular overhead kick when he could have controlled the ball. The teams settled for a draw.

My Prediction: Romania 0-2 Switzerland

France vs Albania – Cruel, cruel game for the minnows

The hosts were riding high following their late win over Romania. Didier Deschamps made two notable changes, starting with Martial and Coman in place of the benched Griezman and Pogba. France were on top but could not seem to get the ball in the net. Olivier Giroud had a handful of headed chances but failed to get most of them on target. He hit the bar with another headed effort in the second half. Before the Giroud header off the bar, Deschamps went back to having both Pogba and Griezman on the pitch, their replacements not having had the hoped impact. Albania too hit the post in the second half and were unlucky as the ball bounced out off a prone player after coming back for the upright. It seemed like the match was heading towards a draw. In the 90^th minute, as France flooded the Albanian penalty box, Adil Rami found time and space to cross. He found Griezman perfectly, unmarked, who made no mistake in guiding the ball into the net. France had stolen another win in the dying minutes. To add further injury, Dmitri Payet curled another customary effort into the far corner to extend France’s lead in the 6^th minute of injury time. The country was jumping after this result, as the hosts became the first country to qualify for the second round.

My Predictions: France 3-0 Albania

Group B

Russia vs Slovakia – Slovaks rises to the occasion

Their last gasp draw against England would’ve put the Russians in a good mood. Off the field, their fans were letting them down. Under threat of expulsion, the Russian team took to the field to take on a stronger Slovakian team. Russia dominated the first half hour, having more passion and taking more shots at the Slovak goal. Their inability to convert this into goals was punished as Vladimir Weiss rose highest to meet a Hamsik cross and head Slovakia into the lead. Their lead was soon doubled at the end of the first half as Marek Hamsik curled a wicked shot from a tight angle which went in off the post. With this match happening before the France game, the first of the big guns had laid down the marker for the others in this tournament, before Griezman’s heroics put him into that category too.

In the second half, the game was more evenly balance with Russia not really able to threaten the Slovak goal too much. They finally broke through after 80 minutes as Glushakov headed in at the far post. Slovakia resorted to ling deep to hold on to their lead in the final ten minutes. Russia pushed hard for an equalizer but came up short.

My Prediction: Russia 1-2 Slovakia

England vs Wales – The right players on the pitch bring the right results

It was a wonder how Roy Hodgson stuck to the same team that drew with Russia. To be honest, England were the better team for most of the first half. They attacked better and had more shots on goal. Raheem Sterling missed a good opportunity within the first 10 minutes. The chance needed to fall to a better finisher. England’s wastefulness was punished late in the first half as Gareth Bale converted another free-kick. Joe Hart perhaps should’ve done better.

Roy Hodgson finally ringed the changes in the second half, bringing on both Vardy and Sturridge. Vardy’s influence was almost immediate as he grabbed an opportunistic equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. England was the team on top for most of the second half too but could not break through a resolute Wales rearguard. Hodgson even brought on Rashford, so they were playing with 3 out and out strikers for a long time. A minute into the 3 minute injury time, Sturridge ran through the defense, exchanged passes with a team-mate and found himself free of all defenders about 8 yards from goal. He toe poked it past the goalkeeper and England had snatched a win from the crestfallen Wales.

My Prediction: England 0-1 Wales

Final Score: England 2-1 Wales

Match Previews

Group C

Ukraine vs Northern Ireland

Two teams who showed fight in defeat square off in this match. Ukraine caused problems for World Champions Germany but came out second best. Northern Ireland were beaten by the odd goal, scored in perhaps the only part of the match when they went off the boil for a bit. Despite Ukraine’s better pedigree in recent major tournaments, I’m going for a narrow Northern Ireland win.

My Prediction: Ukraine 0-1 Northern Ireland

Germany vs Poland

I was very tempted to go for a draw in this match. Germany won easily in their first outing despite a shaky start. Poland weren’t at their fluent best either. Things seem to be headed for a stalemate. But this is a major tournament and Germany pull out their best performances when it matters most. Their defense held firm in the last game and this should give them a lot of confidence. Poland have not been able to use Lewandowski well, and a repeat of the same will see him get isolated up front in this game. Just think the German midfield will outclass their neighbours and historical rivals in this one.

My Prediction: Germany 2-1 Poland

Group D

Czech Republic vs Croatia

The lack of outright match-winners will be Czech Republic’s downfall in this game. Croatia were excellent against Turkey, not allowing their opponents to get a foothold in the game. Captain Luka Modric seems up for this tournament and there is a good feeling among the squad in general. The Czechs were overrun for most of their match against Spain, succumbing to a late winner from Pique. They’ll be looking to keep their challenge alive but it is unlikely they’ll come out on top here.

My Prediction: Czech Republic 1-2 Croatia

Spain vs Turkey

Turkey will have to pull out something really special if they are to get something out of this game. Spain, as is their custom, had the lion’s share of possession in their last game. They’ll do the same here. Turkey lacked cutting edge in their outing against Croatia. They’ll have to pull themselves into shape if they are to get even a point here. The game will likely be decided by the odd goal.

My Prediction: Spain 1-0 Turkey

Group E

Belgium vs Republic of Ireland

Belgium were well and truly out-maneuvered in their outing against the wily Italians. They’ll have to be far more clinical here. The Irish are never ones to go down without a fight. They were the better team against Sweden and were unlucky not to get all 3 points. I expect both teams to score in this game. Belgium will look to get their campaign running. A bad result here for them will be cause for massive headaches. Wilmots needs to get the right personnel on the pitch to encourage a more positive performance from his Belgian team.

My Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Italy vs Sweden

Italy should be too strong for Sweden in this match. Sweden are overly reliant on Ibrahimovich. If any team can neutralize particular players, it is Italy. Antonio Conte received huge praise for his tactics against Belgium. Italy will be looking for a repeat performance. Sweden need more players to take the initiative going forward. Ibrahimovich was having to drop deep or go wide to get on the ball. That is not where he is at his deadliest. The Swedish midfield need to get the ball to Ibrahimovich in and around the penalty area. Only then can they hope for a positive result.

My Prediction: Italy 2-1 Sweden

European Championships - Day 5

The first set of matches are drawing to a close. So far, the European Championships have been a low scoring affair with no team playing free flowing football and no one dominating their opponents, yet. It would seem that the players are taking time getting used to their national team-mates and their managers’ tactics. It is exactly because of these reasons that I think the second set of matches will see teams really coming into their own.

Since my last update, six matches have been played. I previewed those games in my last post. A couple of games really caught the eye, but the results have mostly gone to script. In this post, I will be reviewing the games played over the past two days and look ahead to the matches of groups F, A and B. My next update will be after the England versus Wales game on Thursday.

Group C

Poland vs Northern Island - Poland have too much for their opponents

The Northern Irish were playing their first match at an international tournament since 1986, but this was their appearance at the European Championships. They were looking to make a good first impression and came into this game on the back of a 12 game unbeaten streak. The Poles were looking to break their hoodoo, still searching for their first win in the European Championships.

The first half saw both teams trying to take the initiative. The new boys were mostly kept on the back foot, with Poland spurning a number of opportunities to take lead. Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern made a couple of smart saves to keep the scores level. Poland took the game to the Northern Irish at the start of the second half and were rewarded early as Milik drove his left footed shot past the goalkeeper. It was Poland who mostly remained on the front foot with only a Kyle Lafferty overhead kick giving the Northern Irish fans something cheer about.

My Prediction: Poland 2-1 Northern Ireland

Final Score: Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Germany vs Ukraine - The World Champions overcome a shaky start to seal the deal

There was a sense of anticipation as the World Champions started their campaign. Germany started the game without a recognized striker, something they’ve been doing quite often recently. Much of the early play was dominated by Germany, as they dominated possession and made inroads into the Ukrainian defense. Their efforts bore fruit in the 12^th minute, as Shkodran Mustafi headed home from a Toni Kroos free-kick. The Ukrainians, to their credit, starting getting back into the game from the half-hour mark. They almost got a goal only to be denied by an acrobatic clearance on the line by Jerome Boateng. Manuel Neuer was in supreme form. Ukraine finished the first-half the stronger team. In the second half, Germany kept the ball better, creating a couple of chances. Ukraine did have the odd opening but could not capitalize. Coming on as a 90^th minute substitute. Bastian Schweinsteiger made the result secure, crossing from assist-master Ozil’s perfectly placed cross. It wasn’t the best display from the World Champs, but they got through unscathed.

My Prediction: Germany 2-1 Ukraine

Final Score: Germany 2-0 Ukraine

Group D

Turkey vs Croatia - Modric blasts Croatia to victory

Croatia are considered dark horses for this tournament, and they gave a glimpse to justify this. The match started out eventually but soon Croatia showed their superiority. It’s not that Turkey were playing particularly badly, but they could not match the team effort being put in by their opponents. A sustained spell of Croatia pressure was capped off by an incredible 30 yard volley by Captain Luka Modric, a contender for goal of the tournament! His celebration was worthy of the goal too. Although Turkey tried to get a foothold after the goal, they were not able to trouble the Croatian defense.

The second half was played out in a similar vein as Turkey huffed and puffed but Croatia were almost always a step ahead. The Turkish midfield didn’t have their best outing with Arda Turan particularly off colour. The entry of Emre Mor brightened up their pursuits down the right flank. This guy is definitely a player to watch out for, with Borussia Dortmund beating out Liverpool in securing his signing recently. He could not inspire a comeback though and Croatia were worthy winners.

My Prediction: Turkey 1-0 Croatia

Spain vs Czech Republic - Underwhelming, but enough for the defending champions

The defending champions were coming into this tournament without the perfect preparation. They had suffered a humiliating defeat to 137^th ranked Georgia just days before the tournament. Czech Republic had slipped under the radar during qualification and were hoping to do the same to qualify from this tough group.

The first half was a boring affair with Spain characteristically dominating possession, but without any final product. The highlight of the half was the collision between the linesman and Alvaro Morata. Pretty much sums it up! The second half mostly followed the same pattern. The Spaniards put unrelenting pressure on the tiring Czech defense in the last quarter of an hour. Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 87^th minute. Andreas Iniesta put a perfectly placed cross, gliding over two defenders’ reach, on a platter for Gerard Pique to guide into the net. Spain had ground down another opponent, but this was not championship winning form.

My Prediction: Spain 2-0 Czech Republic

Final Score: Spain 1-0 Czech Republic

Group E

Republic of Ireland vs Sweden - Sweden are too reliant on Zlatan

The eagerly awaited entry of Zlatan Ibrahimovich was accompanied by much fanfare. His team, however, was put under quite a bit of pressure by the spunky Irish. Ireland had the better chances in the first half, with Jeff Hendrick coming close on two occasions, including a shot of the crossbar. Ibrahimovic was kept out of the game for the most part, and he was having to drop deeper and deeper to get on the ball.

In the second half, too, Ireland started better. Wes Hoolahan scored with an impeccable and unstoppable half-volley early in the half to give the Irish a deserved lead. The Swedes replied well, keeping more possession and getting shots in on goal. Cieran Clark almost scored into his own net soon after his team had taken the lead. A few minutes later, Ibrahimovic’s low cross was turned into his own net by Clark himself. He had to get something on the ball as Sebastien Larsson was unmarked in front of an open goal behind him. His attempted clearance ended up in the back of the net! Sweden never looked likely to push on for the win and the Irish would consider themselves unlucky to be taking only one point from this game. Isaksson made a couple of good saves to deny the Irish. Sweden would be the happier team having shared the points.

My Prediction: Republic of Ireland 0-1 Sweden

Belgium vs Italy - Age is just a number for Buffon, and form is only temporary for Italy

The match of the game-week lived up to its billing. An end-to-end affair, the Italian defense played superbly to deny a talented Belgium team throughout the game. The Belgians started livelier, with Nainggolan shooting wide first and then having his shot saved by Buffon. The ageing goalkeeper seems to still be at the top of his game. The pass of the tournament so far came in the middle of the half with Leonardo Bonucci floating a ball on to Emanuele Giaccherini’s chest, just over Toby Alderweireld’s head. The midfielder made no mistake in slotting past Courtois.

Marc Wilmots brought on Divock Origi in attack in the second half. The young forward missed two glorious headed opportunities, putting one over the bar and completely missing the other. Thibaut Courtois did his best to keep the Italians from increasing their lead with a couple of fine saves. The match was put to bed in the dying minutes as Graziano Pelle volleyed into the empty net. The goal was followed by a grand celebration, including Buffon running the length of the pitch to join in. The passion and fervour of the experienced goalkeeper’s reaction showed just how much this win meant to him and to the team. Antonio Conte got his tactics spot-on while Belgium still look unlikely to get things right on the big stage.

My Prediction: Belgium 1-1 Italy

Final Score: Belgium 0-2 Italy

Austria vs Hungary

Day 6 will see another dark-horse Austria take the field against neighbours Hungary. The Austrians should have too much fire-power for their neighbours, with the likes of Arnautovic and Alaba likely to make the telling difference.

My Prediction: Austria 2-0 Hungary

Portugal vs Iceland

In what could turn out to be a fight between passion and skill, debutantes Iceland will look to upset the odds. The two oldest players in the tournament square off in the form of Ricardo Carvalho and Eidur Gudjonssen in this match. Incidentally, they were team-mates at Chelsea during Mourinho’s first stint. Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to silence his critics. There is always extra pressure when he plays. The Portuguese have had a good preparation for the Euros, with convincing wins in the friendlies.

My Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Iceland

Group A

Romania vs Switzerland

Switzerland should be too strong in this game, provided they shake off their indifferent start. Although Romania were sprightly in their first game, causing problems to hosts France, they might just fall short as their opponents start to get into the groove in the tournament.

My Prediction: Romania 0-2 Switzerland

France vs Albania

In what could be the first one-sided match of the tournament, France should win this game easily. Any other result, while a massive reason for celebration for minnows Albania, would lead to serious inquests among the hosts.

Group B

Russia vs Slovakia

Slovakia will be hurting after their loss to Wales, a match they would’ve liked to take something from. They were in the game the whole time, but could not get a second goal. They would do well to push their star Marek Hamsik further up the field, into areas where he can run at and create problems for the Russian defense. Russia, despite their last gasp draw against England, look short of players who can influence a game. They’ll do well to get something out of this one.

My Prediction: Russia 1-2 Slovakia

England vs Wales

The most anticipated game of the finals so far. England will look to bounce back from a disappointing draw with Russia in a match they should’ve walked away with. Wales are bouncing, with the hard-fought win against filling them confidence. Wales will have very little to lose and expect them to go full throttle from the word go. England will need to manage the midfield exchanges well, else they could be in real trouble. My boldest prediction yet as I think Wales will edge it, with England manager Roy Hodgson messing up the tactics again.
